• A woman was killed on southbound I-880 near the Washington Avenue exit in San Leandro after her car hit the concrete center median and then careened across the freeway.
• A man was killed on northbound I-880 near the intersection with I-980 in downtown Oakland when his SUV was sideswiped and then flipped over on the freeway.
• Both accidents are still being investigated.
The California Highway Patrol said Alyssa Collins of Oakley lost control of her 2010 Subaru for unknown reasons and allowed it to drifted over to the left, where it crashed into the concrete center median. The Subaru then careened over to the right, crossed all lanes of traffic, and slammed into attenuator barrels on the shoulder, according to KTVU News.
The Subaru then went into a spin, traveled back into the traffic lanes and came to a stop in the middle of the roadway, where two cars crashed into it.
The first car to crash into the Subaru was a 2006 Ford driven by a 35-year-old Hayward man, KTVU reported. Right after that, a 2008 Toyota driven by a 54-year-old Hayward man plowed into the wreckage.
Emergency crews who responded to the accident found Collins outside of her car. It was not clear how she ended up there. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
The drivers of the other cars were not seriously injured, the CHP said.
The second fatal crash occurred at about 4 p.m. on northbound I-880 near the Jackson Street exit, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.
California Highway Patrol officer Sam Morgan said a Nissan coupe traveling 40 to 45 mph changed out of a lane and then back into it again where northbound I-880 merges with westbound I-980, near the Oakland Police Department and jail in downtown Oakland.
When the Nissan re-entered the lane, it sideswiped a Toyota 4 Runner, Morgan said. The impact cause the Toyota to roll over at least once.
A passenger in the Toyota died at the scene. The Toyota driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Highland Hospital to be treated in the trauma unit.
Neither the driver of the Nissan nor the passenger riding with him were injured.
Morgan said alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
Both accidents are still under investigation.
