• The truck went across the southbound lanes of the freeway and slammed into an overpass embankment.
• The driver was ejected and died instantly.
• Police are trying to determine if he fell asleep at the wheel.
The truck driver — later identified as 55-year-old Bruce Land of Lodi — was a was a subcontracted delivery driver for Costco Wholesale Corporation. He had just left a Costco distribution center in Tracy and was traveling north on I-5 to make a delivery at a Costco store near Sacramento.
California Highway Patrol officer Daniel Webb said Land crashed into the center divider near Twin Cities Road. The truck went airborne and crossed all of the freeway’s southbound lanes before it slammed into the embankment of the South Dierssen Road overpass, shearing the top off of the truck.
Land was ejected from the truck and died instantly, investigators said.
Groceries were blasted from the truck and scattered all over the freeway and on the overpass above. Webb said the scene looked like a bomb had exploded.
No other vehicles were present on the freeway at the time of the accident. Investigators are trying to figure out what caused Land to lose control of the truck. There were no signs that he had braked, so police wonder if he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The truck was to be examined for signs of malfunction.
The southbound side of the freeway was closed for hours while crews cleared the scene and officials conducted a preliminary investigation. The overpass was closed while Caltrans engineers checked the integrity of the bridge. They , said it didn’t appear to have any structural damage.
