Hayward Truck Accident Lawyers | Trucker Killed in Crash

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

The family of a Hayward truck driver who died when his truck plunged into the water from the S-curve on the upper deck of the Bay Bridge filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Caltrans on Wednesday. The suit claims Tahir Sheikh Fakhar died because of inadequate warning signs before the curve, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

California Highway Patrol investigators said they thought Fakhar may have been driving 10 mph over the 40 mph speed at the time. The speed limit on the rest of the bridge is 50 mph, but was reduced to 40 mph for the curve. Fakhar had not driven on the bridge since the curve was installed a month prior, his family says. There had been 43 accidents on the curve, none of them fatal, prior to Fakhar’s deadly crash.

The lawsuit alleges that Caltrans design was negligent and failed to warn drivers in advance that they were coming into the dangerous curve. After Fakhar died, officials installed warning signs, striping and other safety measures.

Merced Plane Crash Lawyer | Fatal plane crash

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

California’s Highway 99 was shut down near Merced on Tuesday when a twin-engine plane crashed into an offramp embankment, killing the pilot and barely missing traffic on the busy highway. The exit ramp was still closed Wednesday so the Federal Aviation Administration could investigate the crash, according to the Merced Sun Star.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane struck a pole and then the embankment shortly after it took off from Merced Regional Airport at around 11:30 a.m.

One eyewitness said the plan came in low and clipped some treetops before it started sputtering like it was losing power. Another witness said he also saw the plane begin to sputter and then it “dropped like a rock,” he said.

Ewing was an experienced pilot who had been flying since he was 20 years old, his son said. He had just been recertified on Monday and was test-flying the plane.

Turlock Truck Accident Lawyers | Man Missing After Fatal Crash

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Turlock Truck Accident Lawyers report that on Tuesday, April 27, emergency crews continued to look for a person believed to be a passenger in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup that crashed into a Honda Accord on Highway 85 in Porterville Monday evening.  One driver was killed from multiple blunt injuries sustained in the crash.  Injured in the crash were two men in the Honda who were taken to a local hospital. One man was released with torn tendons in his right hand; he will require surgery. The other man remains in the hospital, according to coverage in the Visalia Times-Delta.

Emergency crews continued their search because evidence from the crash scene suggested someone might have been ejected from the pickup into a nearby canal during the collision. Furthermore, family members of the deceased said that a 34-year old Porterville man was last seen with the driver and has not been heard from since.

Palo Alto Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers | Diabetes drug could halt damage from spinal cord injuries

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

A new study reported in the Science Translational Medicine journal last week says a generic diabetes drug used in conjunction with a gene-blocking drug may be able to stop spinal cord injuries from getting worse and causing paralysis after the initial onset.

The procedure works by stopping the bleeding that occurs when capillaries burst after a brain or spinal cord injury, Marc Simard of the University of Maryland told Reuters. The blood carries chemicals called inflammatory factors that are meant to heal but often increase the damage. That’s why patients can appear to be OK after a traumatic brain injury or a stroke, but then get much worse or even die a few hours later.

In lab experiments with mice and rats, Simard’s team has been able to successfully block the ABCC8 gene that starts the post-injury bleeding process. They used the diabetes drug glyburide and a gene-blocking drug together. The next step is to try it on people.

“I think we are pretty darn close to a clinical trial,” Simard told Reuters.

Glyburide is already in Phase I safety trials for treating traumatic brain injury and stroke, Simard said.

Buena Park Accident Lawyers | Roller Coaster Accident at Amusement Park

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

A California Division of Occupational Safety and Health investigation report released Tuesday found that both Knott’s Berry Farm and Intamin AG, a Swiss manufacturer, are at fault in a 2009 roller coaster accident that injured two riders.  Negligent maintenance caused a cable to snap loose during a zero-to-80 mph hydraulic launch, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The theme park issued a statement saying the state’s report “identified shortcomings in the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the inspection and maintenance of the cable” and that Cal/OSHA required Knott’s Berry Farm to “put into place additional safeguards to determine cable viability and to work with the manufacturer to revise maintenance instructions.”

Knott’s Berry Farm had been inspecting the cable every six months instead of every month as the manufacturer intended because the maintenance instructions were confusing, the Cal/OSHA report said.  The accident cut a 2-year-old boy’s leg and injured a man’s back. It was captured on video and posted on YouTube.
