Police have arrested the driver in a single-vehicle hit-and-run accident that killed two people Thursday in Gilroy, California.
When police arrived at the scene moments after the rollover accident occurred — around 1 a.m. — they found one person who had been ejected from the vehicle and another still inside, according to a KION 36 News report. Gilroy Fire Department paramedics pronounced both persons dead at the scene.
Shortly afterward, police officers found a third person, David Torres, not far away. He had fled the scene on foot. Police took him to a local trauma center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Later, police ascertained that Torres had been the driver of the vehicle in which the two others were killed.
Torres was charged with driving under the influence causing injury, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while Intoxicated, and fleeing the scene of an accident after committing vehicular manslaughter. He was held at the Santa Clara County Jail.
The accident is still under investigation.
