Gilroy Car Accident Lawyers | Driver Charged in Fatal DUI Hit-and-Run

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Police have arrested the driver in a single-vehicle hit-and-run accident that killed two people Thursday in Gilroy, California.

When police arrived at the scene moments after the rollover accident occurred — around 1 a.m. — they found one person who had been ejected from the vehicle and another still inside, according to a KION 36 News report. Gilroy Fire Department paramedics pronounced both persons dead at the scene.

Shortly afterward, police officers found a third person, David Torres, not far away. He had fled the scene on foot. Police took him to a local trauma center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Later, police ascertained that Torres had been the driver of the vehicle in which the two others were killed.

Torres was charged with driving under the influence causing injury, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while Intoxicated, and fleeing the scene of an accident after committing vehicular manslaughter. He was held at the Santa Clara County Jail.

The accident is still under investigation.

Victorville Car Accident Lawyers | Barbed Wire Holds Car Over Edge of Aquaduct

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A Kia that swerved to avoid a head-on collision in front of him was thrust into the fence and literally left hanging over the California Aquaduct Wednesday morning. Three strands of barbed wire atop the fence kept the vehicle from plunging into the water below, according to a report in the Victoville Daily Press.

Sgt. John Mattke of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the Kia was just “hanging there looking down into the water.”

The accident he had seen in front of him involved a southbound Ford pickup truck that crossed the double yellow lines  into the northbound lane near Victorville, California, and crashed head-on into a Lincoln Town Car. Officials said the driver of the Lincoln sustained major injuries.

The driver of the Kia came up behind the accident and swerved to avoid hitting the cars.

The accidents occurred around 5 a.m., officials said.

Lodi Car Accident Lawyers | SUV Hits Police Cruiser, 2 Officers Injured

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A woman driving an SUV crashed into a police cruiser Wednesday morning on Interstate 5 near Highway 50 in Sacramento, California. The woman and two Sacramento Police Department officers had to be transported to an area hospital to be treated for injuries, according to a report in the Modesto Bee.

The police officers had pulled over to the shoulder around 8 a.m. to assist in a non-injury accident. The woman driving the SUV lost control of her vehicle and hit the parked police car around 8:20, Sacramento police Sgt. Norm Leong said. The two police officers were inside the car when it was hit.

Some of the southbound lanes were closed on Interstate 5, which caused a rush-hour traffic jam, according to a CBS13 News report.

The victims’ names were not disclosed as of Wednesday afternoon.

Santa Ana Accident Lawyers | Faulty Turbine Blade Caused Fatal Chopper Crash

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A report released Tuesday by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Office of Aviation ruled that turbine fatigue caused a helicopter crash that killed the pilot and a passenger on Catalina Island in May 2008. Three other passengers sustained serious injuries in the accident.

The NTSB report stated that a power turbine blade fractured due to fatigue, with two adjacent blades receiving secondary damage, according to Aviation International News. The helicopter’s Turbomeca Arriel 1B engine had been removed and a Honeywell LTS101-600-A3 engine was installed in its place, the NTSB said. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had issued the helicopter a new airworthiness certificate.

The type of blades that were used on the helicopter are no longer being used, the NTSB said.

“Metallurgical analysis showed that the fatigue emanated from the area of the pins” the report stated. “The blades are no longer being manufactured as the casting has been modified to reduce the number and placement of the platinum pins.”

A Honeywell spokesperson told Aviation International News that the company does not agree with the NTSB report.

Chico Accident Lawyers | Pilot Still Missing in Siskiyou Plane Crash

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Authorities are still searching for 84-year-old Alonzo Mullin of Medford, Oregon, who was flying a small plane home Saturday afternoon and crashed in California’s Siskiyou County. The plane went down in bad weather near the Titus Ridge area of Happy Camp, according to a KTVL Channel 10 News report. Mullin is presumed dead.

The pilot had advised the FAA that he was having trouble descending through the clouds at around 1:30 p.m., after which the aircraft dropped off radar and lost radio contact, according to a Siskiyou Daily News report.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said most of the wreckage from the plane crash was found, including Mullin’s cell phone, wallet and other personal items. The wreckage was scattered over a mile-long debris field, authorities said. They found both wings with the landing wheels in a locked-down position, the engine, the fuselage, parts of the control panel and smaller pieces of the airplane.

The search continued on Tuesday, after the cooperating agencies met Monday to plan their next move in a steep and rugged terrain. But an impending storm is expected to bring rain and snow to the area, which will prevent any air operations, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office. Weather has already hampered search operations by helicopter and scent dogs. A group of volunteers has been searching on the ground since Saturday.
