An East Oakland resident was killed in a house fire Sunday. He succumbed to smoke inhalation while he was asleep and then suffered fatal burn injuries before rescuers arrived.

•   A fire broke out in an apartment above a garage in an East Oakland home.

•   Three people escaped safely from the house, but a man who was still sleeping succumbed to smoke inhalation and then burned to death before the fire department arrived.

•   Fire officials dispatched an arson unit to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire was reported at 7:30 a.m., according to a report in the Oakland Tribune.

Four engines from the Oakland Fire Department responded to the alarm in the 7800 block of Arthur Street near 79th Avenue and arrived within about two minutes. Battalion Chief Adrian Shepard said the fire started in a sublet apartment above the garage.

Three roommates fled the burning house and told firefighters a man was trapped inside, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

A rescue unit went into the apartment but found the victim already dead. Shepard said the 55-year-old man — later identified as Benny Wakefield Jr. – had been “overcome by smoke and burned afterward.”

It took 16 firefighters 12 minutes to put out the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. An arson unit was dispatched to the scene.

Neighbor Larry Dorsey told the Tribune that everyone in the neighborhood really liked Wakefield, who had moved in about three or four months ago. He was living on disability. He told friends he’d been badly injured in a shooting, Dorsey said.

“I loved him. We all loved him,” Dorsey said. “We wish him farewell, and may God bless him and his family.”

Friends and family gathered outside the burnt home to console each other Sunday morning (see photos below).

Calabasas: Hit-and-Run Driver May Have Caused Fatal Crash on Hwy 101

Police believe a hit-and-run driver may have caused a fatal crash on Highway 101 that killed a 9-year-old girl and critically injured her mother Saturday in Calabasas.

•   A large, white SUV sideswiped a Chrysler sedan on Highway 101 and kept on driving. The impact caused the Chrysler to roll over several times and burst into flames.

•   A 9-year-old girl burned to death in the car. Her mother suffered third-degree burns on 95 percent of her body, including her lungs. She is not expected to survive.

•   Police are looking for the SUV or any information about it.

The deadly car accident occurred at about 8:30 a.m., according to a KTLA News report.

California Highway Patrol fficer Leland Tang said 27-year-old Gilani Taylor, an aspiring R&B singer and songwriter, was driving a 1995 Chrysler sedan eastbound on the freeway at the time of the accident.

Initially, little was known about the accident. Early reports stated that Taylor lost control of her vehicle, crashed into a center divider, spun out, and slammed into a big-rig.

Subsequently, however, witnesses came forward and told police a different story. One of the witnesses was in the vehicle directly behind Taylor’s at the time of the crash. She said a large, white SUV sideswiped Taylor’s car and knocked it out of control.

The SUV kept driving, but Taylor’s car rolled over and slid about 20 feet on its roof, and then burst unto flames, Tang said. The blaze completely engulfed the vehicle within seconds.

Taylor managed to crawl from the car but she was unable to pull out her 9-year-old daughter. A number of Good Samaritans tried to help.

“She crawled out of the window and started crawling on her elbows to get out of the car,” witness Dale Johnsen said. ”Then these guys who were out there grabbed her under the arms and pulled her from the second to fourth lane.”

Taylor was literally on fire. The Good Samaritans ripped off their shirts and tried to put out the flames on her skin.

“She’s rolling in pain, on fire, and her skin is all falling off,” Johnsen said. “I was shocked at first, I thought it was a horror movie.”

Taylor’s 9-year-old daughter burned to death in the car.

Taylor suffered severe burn injuries on 95 percent of her body, including her lungs. She was airlifted via helicopter to UCLA Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition.

She was later transferred to the burn center at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center (LAC-USC), where spokesperson Rosa Saca said almost all of Taylor’s burns were third degree. Family members told KTLA all of the skin on Taylor’s body was burned off except the skin on the bottom of her feet. Doctors said her chances of survival were slim.

“Her chances of surviving are small at best,” Dr. Warren Gardner of the LAC-USC Trauma Center told ABC News. “Children occasionally survive burns this size. In general, adults don’t. She’s a healthy 27-year-old, so we’ll do the best we can and see what happens.”

Taylor was being kept alive on a respirator. Her husband, Rodney Taylor, asked for prayers and is hoping for a miracle.

Tang said the CHP is now looking for that white, early 2000s model SUV. After hitting Taylor’s Chrysler sedan, the SUV continued east on the 101 Freeway under the La Virgenes Road overpass. The witness did not see if the driver was male or female, Tang said.

Anyone with information about the white SUV or the accident is urged to call the CHP at (818) 888-0980.

San Francisco Burn Injury Lawyers | Work Accident at Transit Center

A worker suffered a serious burn injury Saturday when he came into contact with a live wire at the Transbay Transit Center site in San Francisco.

•   A construction worker who was handling underground utilities apparently cut through an electrical line that turned out to be live.

•   The wire sparked and gave the man serious burns on his face and hands.

•   The injured worker was hospitalized and is expected to recover.

•   Cal/OSHA is investigating the accident.

California Construction Site Accident LawyersThe construction site accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m., according to a CBS News report.

The worker was doing scheduled underground trenching and utilities work along on Fremont Street between Howard and Mission streets when he came into contact with an electrical line.

The power line turned out to be live. It sparked and gave the worker serious burns on his face and hands, according to the SF Appeal newspaper.

The worker was transported via ground ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

News reports said his burns were third degree, but Transbay Joint Powers Authority spokesman Adam Alberti said they were second degree. He said the man is doing well and expected to recover.

It’s not clear how the worker came into contact with the live wire, Alberti said. Media reports indicated that the worker was relocating utilities and may have cut through the wire, not realizing it was live.

All work was immediately stopped at that part of the site.

” Work on that particular location has been halted until we are able to determine exactly what caused the incident to ensure that it is safe to continue,” Alberti said.

Officials from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) are investigating the workplace accident.

Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman Joe Molica said the accident underscores the crucial importance of identifying electrical lines before doing any sort of work on them.

“If construction workers ever have questions … they should stop and call us, 24 hours a day and we can come down — especially on a project of this size and magnitude,” Molica said.

Molica did not indicate whether the underground power lines in this case had any labels or tags to indicate their status.

Construction is continuing on the rest of the site, which spans five blocks. The million-square-foot Transbay Transit Center is expected to be completed in 2017.

Santa Rosa Injury Lawyers | Industrial Accident Crushes Worker’s Hand

A worker's hand was crushed in a press at BIW Connector Systems in Santa Rosa.

A 29-year-old man is likely to lose his hand after it was crushed and burned in an industrial accident Wednesday at the BIW Connectors Systems plant in Santa Rosa.

•   A worker’s hand was caught in a hydraulic press at the BIW Connectors Systems plant.

•   The press crushed the worker’s hand and severely burned it.

•   The man was taken to a local hospital and then transfered to a burn unit in San Francisco.

•   Authorities said he is likely to lose his hand as a result of the accident.

The workplace accident occurred at 6 p.m., according to a report in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Acting fire battalion chief Jason Jenkins said the worker’s left hand was crushed in a large hydraulic press that manufactures components for the oil industry.

The worker, whose identity was not released, suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of his hand being trapped in the machine. In addition to his hand being crushed, the man suffered third-degree burns to his hand and forearms. The burns were caused by the heat the machine generates under pressure, according to a San Jose Mercury News report.

The severely injured worker was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for initial treatment and then transferred to the burn center at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco.

A co-worker also suffered burn injuries when he tried to help the worker whose hand was trapped in the machine before emergency crews arrived. The co-worker was taken to Sutter Hospital in Santa Rosa to be treated.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) was notified but did not comment on the accident. It was not known if the accident was caused by a mechanical failure or employee error, fire officials said.

Acting fire battalion chief Jason Jenkins told the Press Democrat the worker is likely to lose his hand as a result of the injuries he sustained on the job. Even if his hand is somehow saved, he may not have use of it. Additionally, the long-term physical and psychosocial effects of a severe burn injury often are devastating, according to medical experts.

“Workers who were hospitalized with work-related burn injuries … are at high risk for developing serious psychiatric (problems) with major costs to both the individual and the society,” study author Naomi Anderson wrote in the May 2011 issue of the Journal of Burn Care and Research. The most common psychiatric issues are depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and other anxiety disorders.

Two dozen people were injured and more than 100 were displaced when a trash compactor exploded and started a hotel fire in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district Tuesday night.

•   A trash compactor exploded and started a fire on the bottom floor of a six-story low-income residential hotel where many disabled people live.

•   Flames and smoke shot up through the garbage chute, spreading to every floor in the building. The fire got so hot that the building’s roof caved in onto the top floor.

•   Firefighters had to rescue many of the residents. Two dozen people suffered smoke inhalation injuries. Most were treated at the scene, but four were hospitalized.

•   More than 100 residents were displaced.

Dispatchers said the fire near Taylor and Eddy streets was first reported at 8:53 p.m., according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The second alarm was added at 9:15 p.m. and the third alarm was added at 9:34 p.m., the Chronicle reported.

The fire started on the first floor of the six-story Franciscan Towers residential hotel, where a trash compactor exploded, Deputy Fire Chief Pat Gardner said. It quickly shot up through the garbage chute, spreading smoke and flames throughout the building. When it reached the top of the hotel the blaze was so hot that the roof of the building collapsed into the sixth floor.

Many disabled people live at the hotel, which is set aside as low-income housing. Some residents were able to escape on their ow, while others had to be rescued by firefighters. A clerk who was on duty at a grocery store across the street said smoke was billowing out of the building as firefighters in five trucks evacuated people though emergency exits. Flames were coming out of the top of the building.

“We had to grab a couple of towels and put them over our face so we could come down the stairwell and get out,” resident Cordell Lynch told ABC News as he stood on the sidewalk waiting for his neighbors to be rescued. “There’s a lot of people in there, elderly people, people in wheelchairs. It’s hard to get out of there.”

Resident Frank Sparkman said he could see the smoke coming “up, up, up”  through the chute. Flames engulfed the halls.

“The whole hallway was like a towering inferno in there” Sparkman. “It was just unbearable.

Most of the people who were injured were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene, but four were taken to a hospital.  It wasn’t known whether those four suffered burn injuries. Officials said no life-threatening injuries were reported.

More than 100 residents were displaced by the fire. Some of them were in a Red Cross evacuation center directly across the street; others went to buildings owned by the non-profit organization that owns and operates the Franciscan Towers.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze by about 10:15 p.m., but there were flare-ups until early Wednesday morning. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but officials do not suspect arson.
