A drowsy driver suffered major injuries in a head-on collision on Highway 20 in Lucerne.

A drowsy driver who may have fallen asleep at the wheel suffered major injuries Wednesday in a head-on collision on Highway 20 in Lucerne, about 65 miles north of Santa Rosa.

•   A drowsy driver’s car drifted into the oncoming traffic lane on a rural highway.

•  An oncoming van swerved to the other lane to avoid hitting the car, but the car swerved back into that lane at the same time.

•   Still trying to avoid a collision, both vehicles then veered into the other lane, where they crashed head-on.

•   The van driver was not injured but the car driver sustained major injuries and had to be cut out of his car and then airlifted to a hospital.

The rural highway accident occurred at about 8:20 a.m., according to an article in the Lake County Record-Bee.

The California Highway Patrol reported that 59-year-old William J. Adams, a resident of Ukiah, was driving a silver Saturn coupe eastbound on the highway at the time.

Lucerne Accident LawyersAuthorities said Adams may have fallen asleep when his Saturn drifted into the westbound lane near Ogden Road. Police did not know for sure how fast the vehicle was traveling at the time.

Witnesses said a westbound white GMC van — driven by 35-year-old Christopher Genho Jr. of Clearlake Oaks — swerved over into the eastbound lane to try to avoid hitting the Saturn, but the Saturn suddenly veered back into the eastbound lane as well.

Both drivers then swerved back into the westbound lane to try to avoid a collision, but they crashed head-on in that lane.

Genho was not injured, but Adams was trapped inside of his car. Emergency crews had to cut the vehicle to free him. He sustained very serious injuries and was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to be treated.

Northshore Fire Protection District Chief Jay Beristianos said both lanes of the rural highway were closed, but only for about 45 minutes.

Drowsy Driving = Deadly Mistake

More than 1,550 people are killed every year on U.S. roads due to accidents involving drowsy drivers, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics reported by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Another  71,000 are seriously injured.

Drowsiness and fatigue may play a role in crashes attributed to other causes, including driving under the influence, NSF research shows. About one million crashes each year occur due to driver inattention/lapses which may be caused by drowisness.

Lack of sleep is a common problem for busy Americans who work long hours and manage families as well. According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, people who sleep six to seven hours a night are twice as likely to be involved in fatigue-related crashes as those who sleep eight hours or more. People who sleep less than five hours a night are four to five times as likely to be involved in such crashes.

NHTSA Says 2010 Car Accident Death Rate Lowest Since 1949

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

California Car Accident Lawyers

Car accident deaths have dropped to their lowest rate in more than 60 years, federal experts said this week, but distracted driving is becoming more troubling than ever.

•   The good news is that the number of car accident fatalities is lower that it has been since 1949 — even though more people are driving far more miles.

•   The decrease in deaths is related to safer cars, safer roads, buckling up, and less drunk driving.

•   The bad news is that talking and texting while driving is on the rise. A nationwide NHTSA survey shows that 66 percent of U.S. drivers take calls, hold their phones, and continue to drive.

The latest National Highway Transportation Administration figures show that 32,885 people died in traffic accidents in 201o, a 2.9 percent decrease from 2009, according to a Consumer Reports news story. The report showed that 2,715 of the 2010 traffic deaths occurred in California.

To make the comparison even more accurate, the NHTSA pointed out that Americans drive many more miles today than they did in 1949, and still get in few fatal accidents. Back in 1949, the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was higher than 7, but in 2010 it was 1.1 — also a historic low.

The drop since 1949 can be largely attributed to four issues:

  • Cars are safer.
  • Roads are safer.
  • Seat restraint systems are better and more people use them.
  • A smaller percentage of motorists drive drunk.

That’s all very good news, but there is some bad news too.

The NHTSA’s Survey on Distracted Driving Attitudes and Behaviors, released this week, shows that the percentage of drivers who continue to talk on the phone while driving has gone up, despite laws against it.

Ten states — California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington — and the District of Columbia ban talking on a hand-held cell phone. Texting is banned for all drivers in 35 states and the District of Columbia.

Yet the survey found that 66 percent of motorists take phone calls and continue to drive. What makes this especially disturbing is that most of these drivers were not using hands-free systems. Most of the drivers involved in the survey said they typically answer the phone, hold it, and continue to drive. Only 9 percent use an in-car hands-free Bluetooth system.

About 2 out of 10 drivers (18 percent) said they have sent text messages or e-mails while driving — but almost half (49 percent) of drivers between age 21 and 24 years old say they do so.

More than half of all drivers said they believe using a cell phone or sending a text message or e-mail has no effect on their driving performance.

About a third of drivers aged 18 to 24 said they can take their eyes off the road for 3 to 10 seconds — or more — before driving becomes significantly more dangerous.

There were 3,092 traffic fatalities directly related to talking or texting while driving in 2010.

A drowsy driver caused a major injury car accident Tuesday morning when she crashed into the center divide of Highway 1 in Aptos, a little less than 10 miles from Santa Cruz.

•   A drowsy driver lost control of her BMW and slammed into the center guardrail on Highway 1.

•   The BMW slid across the freeway and collided with an SUV, which went over an embankment and crashed into a tree.

•   The driver and passenger in the SUV suffered major injuries and were airlifted to two different hospitals.

Aptos Car Accident LawyersThe highway crash occurred at about 11:25 a.m., according to a report in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

California Highway Patrol officer Grant Boles said 23-year-old Juliet Olmos of Santa Cruz was driving a BMW 323i northbound on Highway 1 when the accident happened.

Olmos started to doze off as she approached State Park Drive and she lost control of her vehicle.

The BMW crashed into the center guardrail, Boles said.

The car then rebounded off the median and slid across the highway, where it collided with a northbound 2003 Ford Explorer driven by 66-year-old Gary Alfred Carlton of Salinas.

The Explorer went out of control, rolled down an embankment and struck a tree, Boles said. Carlton and his 65-year-old wife, Christine Carol Carlton, were trapped in the vehicle, CHP officer Sarah Jackson said.

Aptos Car Accident LawyersFirefighters climbed down the embankment, freed the victims from the SUV, and carried them back up the hill. Both of them sustained major injuries.

Officials summoned two medical helicopters and stopped all traffic so the choppers could land on the highway.

The victims were airlifted in separate helicopters to different hospitals. The man was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose,  while the woman was flown to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto.

Olmos was not arrested.

The accident is still under investigation.

Drowsy Driver Statistics

Every year 37,000 people are injured — and almost 1,000 are killed — in accidents caused by drowsy drivers, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Admnistration (NHTSA).

Drowsy driving is a major safety hazard, especially because it is so common:

•   62% of surveyed American adults (72% of men and 54% of women) reported driving while feeling drowsy.

•   37% of surveyed American adults (49% of men and 26% of women) said they have dozed off while driving at least once.

•   27% of surveyed American adults (36% of men and 20% of women) said they have dozed off while driving in the past year.

Ten people were hospitalized Wednesday following a multi-vehicle car accident started by an out-of-state driver on northbound Interstate 5 in San Clemente.

•   A driver from Texas was not paying attention when traffic slowed on a busy freeway and he crashed into a car in front of him. That car was forced into another lane, where it hit a third car.

•   Ten people were hospitalized as a result of the accident. Two people suffered major injuries, two suffered moderate injuries, and six suffered minor injuries.

•   Alcohol and drugs were not factors.

San Clemente Car Accident LawyersThe interstate crash occurred at about 1:30 p.m., according to a report in the Dana Point Times.

California Highway Patrol officer Chris Goodwin said a 43-year-old man from San Antonio, Texas, was driving a Dodge Durango in the fast lane of I-5 North and “due to inattention” did not realize that traffic had slowed ahead of him.

The Dodge slammed into a Nissan sedan driven by a 26-year-old man from Los Angeles. The impact forced the Nissan into the No. 2 lane, where it crashed into a Mercedes-Benz driven by a 55-year-old man from Carlsbad, Goodwin said.

Four occupants of the Dodge suffered minor injuries and were taken to U.C. Irvine Medical Center in Orange to be treated, according to a report in the Orange County Register. The driver was not injured.

All six occupants of the Nissan, including the driver, suffered injuries and were taken to Mission Hospital.  Two of them suffered major injuries, two suffered moderate injuries and two suffered minor injuries, Goodwin said.

The driver of the Mercedes either was not injured or declined medical attention.

Eight CHP officers responded to the accident, along with four Orange County fire engines and one ladder truck, Battalion Chief Jim Bailey said. The busy freeway was closed for more than two hours while tow trucks and emergency crews cleared the scene.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be involved in the accident, officials said. No charges were filed but the accident is still under investigation.

Hayward Car Accident Lawyers | Distracted Dad Crashes, Toddler Killed

A toddler was killed and a 7-year-old critically injured when their father crashed into a tree on this rural road near Castro Valley.

A toddler was killed and her 7-year-old sister critically injured in a car accident Monday when their father reached back to pick up a baby bottle and crashed into a tree in an unincorporated area of Alameda County near Castro Valley, about 4 miles west of Hayward.

•  A 27-year-old father was driving on a country road with his 23-month and 7-year-old daughters in the back seat. The toddler was strapped into a child seat and her sister was wearing a seat belt.

•   The toddler dropped her bottle, so the father turned around to pick it up. When he looked up, he saw something in the road, swerved to avoid hitting it, and crashed into a tree at about 40 mph.

•   The toddler was killed. The 7-year-old remains hospitalized with critical injuries. The father’s injuries include a broken leg.

Castro Valley Injury LawyersThe tragic accident occurred at about 2:15 p.m., according to a report in the Hayward Daily Review.

California Highway Patrol officer Steve Perea said 27-year-old Roberto Arreola of Castro Valley was driving a maroon 2010 Honda Pilot SUV south on a rural stretch of Fairview Avenue at a speed of 40 mph when the accident happened.

“That speed is technically over the speed limit, but not grossly or negligently so,” Perea said.

Arreola told San Leandro Patch his 23-month-old daughter Nadia was strapped into a child seat in the back seat of the Pilot.

“She appeared to be buckled correctly,” Perea said.

Arreola said Nadia dropped her bottle so he reached back to pick it up for her.

“By the time I looked up, I saw something on the road — a deer maybe — and I swerved,”  Arreola said. The SUV veered across the center line and into oncoming traffic, continued across the shoulder of the road, and then crashed into a tree, Perea said.

Castro Valley Car Accident LawyersNadia was killed. She was taken from the scene to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau.

Her 7-year-old sister Anaiss, who also was in the back seat and was wearing a seat belt, suffered life-threatening injuries. She was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where she was listed in critical condition. She underwent surgery on Tuesday and is expected to survive, Arreola said.

Arreola was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he was treated and released. He suffered a broken leg among other injuries.

He was distraught about the horrible crash. He told Patch that his friend Brandon Hughes came to the scene of the accident and stayed with him while they waited for emergency crews to arrive. Without Hughes to console him, Arreola said, he “would have gone completely crazy.”

Anaiss is in second grade at Corpus Christi Salesian School in San Francisco. Principal Sister Cecelia Henry said classmates made get-well cards for Anaiss, which Henry brought to her on Thursday. (See photo.)

Perea said officials ruled out drugs or alcohol as a cause of the accident.
