A man who walked away unharmed from a car accident near Redding on Friday was electrocuted moments later when he came into contact with a high-voltage power line.

•   A driver and his passenger both were under the influence of alcohol when their vehicle drifted off the side of a rural road and crashed into a power pole.

•   They got out of the car and walked away, but the driver was electrocuted by the power line that snapped off the pole in the crash. He died at the scene.

•   The passenger walked to another car and drove back to the scene, where he was arrested for drunk driving.

The accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m., according to a report on KRCR News, a local ABC affiliate.

Redding Accident LawyersCalifornia Highway Patrol officer Shawn Montgomery said 25-year-old Mark Tyree of Oak Run was driving a 2001 Ford eastbound on Oak Run to Fern Road — about 10 miles east of Redding — in foggy conditions.

Tyree had a passenger, whose identity was not released, in the car with him.  For unknown reasons, the car drifted off the edge of the road and crashed into a power pole (see photo).

“The power line snapped and fell down to the ground,” Montgomery told KHSL News, a CBS affiliate.

Tyree was able to get out of his vehicle safely and was walking around, Montgomery said. Somehow he got tanhgled up in the power line and he was electrocuted. He died at the scene.

The passenger was shocked by some electrified barbed wire in the road, but he was not seriously injured. He walked to another car and drove back to the scene, where officers arrested him for drunk driving.

Montgomery said police believe both Tyree and his passenger were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Fresno Accident Lawyers | Speeding Teen Electrocuted After Power Pole Crash

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

A 14-year-old driver survived a car accident but was electrocuted when she got out of her car after the crash and stepped on a live power line about 40 miles east of Fresno.

•  A 14-year-old girl was driving a pickup truck at high speed on a wet road on New Year’s Day.

•  The teen driver lost control of the truck on the rain-slicked road and crashed into a PG&E power pole, knocking it down.

•  She wasn’t hurt in the crash, but when she got our of her car, she stepped on a downed live wire and was electrocuted. She died at the scene.

The accident occurred Saturday night in Oakhurst, according to a report in the Fresno Bee.

A 14-year-old Oakhurst girl — who could not have been licensed because the minimum age in California is 16 — was driving a Mazda pickup truck east on Road 68 near Leach Road, the California Highway Patrol reported. She had a 13-year-old passenger from Ahwahnee in the vehicle.

The Oakhurst teen was driving at high speed on wet pavement when she lost control of the vehicle. The truck crashed into a Pacific Gas & Electric power pole.

The force of impact snapped the pole at the base and knocked down live electrical wires. The pickup then crashed into a tree.

Neither of the teens was injured in the crash, the CHP said. But the driver got out of the truck and stepped on a downed live wire and was electrocuted. She died at the scene.

Overhead power lines are an extreme safety hazard. When a motor vehicle makes contact with a live power line, the vehicle itself acts as a conductor. People inside of the vehicle may not be affected by the electric current because the  floor and the seat act as insulation.

If your vehicle makes contact with a high-voltage power line:

1.  Stay inside of the vehicle if it is safe to do so.

2.  Do not touch the vehicle. Touching it could result in electrocution.

3.  Watch your step. Stepping on a live wire is almost certain to produce a lethal shock.

Los Angeles Injury Lawyers | Tampered Gas Line Causes Fatal Explosion

Friday, July 30th, 2010

One man died and another was critically injured Friday in a South Los Angeles industrial workplace explosion which apparently was caused by illegal tampering with a gas line.

Southern California Gas Company had shut off the gas Thursday because the metal-painting company that occupied the building, JL Spray, had not paid its bills, according to the Associated Press. To get their gas — and their business — going, someone had rerouted a pipe around the meter and a regulator that keeps gas at safe levels, the gas company said.

When the gas built up, the building exploded. The blast was so forceful it shattered windows in cars and on a nearby warehouse. Pieces of the melted asphalt roof spewed into the street as shards of exploded tile sprayed the street and nearby businesses. As the building erupted and burst into flames, a man who worked there was hurled out into the street. He suffered severe burn injuries. Paramedics thought he was dead because he had no pulse, but he was later revived and was in critical condition Friday afternoon.

Another man tried to get his truck away from the building, but a high-voltage power pole that had been damaged by the explosion fell on his vehicle and electrocuted him. He died at the scene.

The victims’ names had not been released as of Friday evening.

Lompoc Accident Lawyers | 4 Vehicles Crash Into Verizon Pole

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Highway 246 was closed near Lompoc, California, on Wednesday after four different vehicles crashed into a Verizon pole.

California Highway Patrol officer Jeanne Malone said Jorge Torrez was the first driver to run into the pole, according to a report in the Santa Ynez Valley News. Torrez was transported to a local hospital to be evaluated for injuries after he complained of  pain. Malone said investigators were still trying to determine what caused Torrez to hit the pole.

Five minutes after the first accident, a car driven by Manpreet Pahal hit the loose wires hanging from the pole. She said she had no injuries, but Malone said Pahal would have been electrocuted if she had gotten out of her car.

To avoid electrocution, Malone said, any driver who comes upon downed wires should stay in their vehicle and wait for emergency personnel. “By staying inside your vehicle you are grounded by the tires touching the asphalt,” she said.

Two more vehicles hit the downed Verizon pole or the wires hanging from it.

Caltrans and Verizon representatives were making repairs at the scene, but the CHP could not say when road would be open again.
