Antioch Tragedy: Toddler Killed by Father’s Truck in Driveway Backover

Police are calling the death of an Antioch toddler a tragic accident, after the child darted behind his father’s pickup truck and was run over in front of their house on Monday.

•   A toddler darted out of the house and behind his father’s pickup truck as it was backing out in front of the house.

•   The father did not see his little son and ran over the boy.

•   The little boy died at Children’s Hospital.

The fatal backover accident occurred at 1:21 p.m., according to a report in the Contra Costa Times.

Antioch police Captain Leonard Orman said Malcolm Norris, who would have turned 2 years old in about a week, ran behind his father’s pickup truck as it was backing up at their home on Pembroke Court.

The home is on a cul-de-sac with parking spaces in the center. The pickup truck was backing up from one of the spaces when Malcolm darted out of the house and ran behind the truck.

His father did not see him, police said. The truck ran over the little boy, who suffered grave injuries and was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Oakland. He died at the hospital.

Antioch Car Accident LawyersPolice are calling the tragedy an accident.

“We are investigating, obviously, but everything points to this being a tragic accident,” Orman said.

The family is devastated and in shock, the boy’s uncle, Michael Alexander, told the Times. They had just moved into the home a few months ago.

“They’re doing the best they can. It’s all just so fresh to them. They’re still in shock about the whole situation,” Alexander said. Malcolm was his brother’s first son, Alexander said.

Antioch police Chief Allan Cantando, visited the family on Tuesday to offer his condolences.

“My heart just goes out to them as a parent of a young one myself,” Cantando said. “All parents can learn from this tragedy.”

Cantando stressed the importance of knowing where young children are at all times, especially during hectic holidays.

The tragedy is the latest in which a young child has been accidentally run over, the Times reported:

A 3-year-old Vallejo girl was airlifted Saturday to Children’s Hospital after she was hit by her mother’s car.

A 4-year-old Martinez boy has made what one of his doctors called a “miraculous recovery” after his skull was fractured by his mother’s sport-utility vehicle in June.

In January, a 1-year-old Oakland girl was struck and killed by a truck driven by the girl’s uncle that was backing into a driveway.

And in March 2010, a 4-year-old Hayward boy died after he was struck by a sports-utility vehicle in an apartment complex parking lot.

Congress has ordered the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) to develop requirements for backup detection devices and warning sounds in new vehicles, but it remains crucial to walk around your car to make sure children are safely out of the way before backing up.

A disabled 5-year-old girl was seriously injured when a drunk driver drove off the road and crashed into her bedroom while she was sleeping early Friday morning in Lodi.

•  A 21-year-old drunk driver turned a corner onto his street but was not able to navigate it. He crashed through a neighbor’s fence, skidded across the lawn, and plowed through the wall and window of a sleeping 5-year-old’s bedroom.

•  The little girl, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, suffered at least a broken leg as a result of the accident.

•  The drunk driver fled the scene. Police caught him at his residence, two blocks away, and arrested him on charges of felony DUI, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving.

The hit-and-run accident occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m., according to a report in the Lodi News-Sentinel.

Lodi Police Department spokesperson Dale Eubanks said 21-year-old Jeffery Kenneth Dobretz, who lives two blocks away from the house he crashed into, skidded off the road after turning a corner onto Pinot Noir Drive.

“He made a wide left turn coming off Reisling Drive, smashed through a fence and into the girl’s room,” Eubanks told the News-Sentinel. “The mom heard the noise and saw the pickup backing away from the room.”

The impact forced the little girl’s bed across the room and into an adjacent wall, according to a KCRA News report. The  girl’s leg was broken. She was taken to U.C. Davis Medical Center, where she is being treated for a fracture to her left femur, police said.

The 5-year-old victim, whose identity was not released, is disabled and uses a wheelchair. There was no speculation as to how the injury might affect her disability or whether her disability might make it more difficult to recover from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

After he smashed the house, Dobretz slammed his red Chevrolet pickup truck into reverse and gunned the motor gunned as the tires spun on the grass. He backed the truck off of the lawn and then sped away, witnesses said.

Police found the truck parked in front of Dobretz’s residence, two blocks away. He tried to hop the back fence to escape from police officers but was too drunk to do so, Eubanks said.

Police arrested Dobretz and on charges of felony drunk driving, reckless driving, and felony hit-and-run, according to the KCRA report.

Construction workers put up a wooden barrier across the damaged area of the house to protect the bedroom from further damage and from burglars, who could have gained access to the home through the broken wall and window.

Hayward Car Accident Lawyers | Distracted Dad Crashes, Toddler Killed

A toddler was killed and a 7-year-old critically injured when their father crashed into a tree on this rural road near Castro Valley.

A toddler was killed and her 7-year-old sister critically injured in a car accident Monday when their father reached back to pick up a baby bottle and crashed into a tree in an unincorporated area of Alameda County near Castro Valley, about 4 miles west of Hayward.

•  A 27-year-old father was driving on a country road with his 23-month and 7-year-old daughters in the back seat. The toddler was strapped into a child seat and her sister was wearing a seat belt.

•   The toddler dropped her bottle, so the father turned around to pick it up. When he looked up, he saw something in the road, swerved to avoid hitting it, and crashed into a tree at about 40 mph.

•   The toddler was killed. The 7-year-old remains hospitalized with critical injuries. The father’s injuries include a broken leg.

Castro Valley Injury LawyersThe tragic accident occurred at about 2:15 p.m., according to a report in the Hayward Daily Review.

California Highway Patrol officer Steve Perea said 27-year-old Roberto Arreola of Castro Valley was driving a maroon 2010 Honda Pilot SUV south on a rural stretch of Fairview Avenue at a speed of 40 mph when the accident happened.

“That speed is technically over the speed limit, but not grossly or negligently so,” Perea said.

Arreola told San Leandro Patch his 23-month-old daughter Nadia was strapped into a child seat in the back seat of the Pilot.

“She appeared to be buckled correctly,” Perea said.

Arreola said Nadia dropped her bottle so he reached back to pick it up for her.

“By the time I looked up, I saw something on the road — a deer maybe — and I swerved,”  Arreola said. The SUV veered across the center line and into oncoming traffic, continued across the shoulder of the road, and then crashed into a tree, Perea said.

Castro Valley Car Accident LawyersNadia was killed. She was taken from the scene to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where she was pronounced dead, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau.

Her 7-year-old sister Anaiss, who also was in the back seat and was wearing a seat belt, suffered life-threatening injuries. She was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where she was listed in critical condition. She underwent surgery on Tuesday and is expected to survive, Arreola said.

Arreola was taken to Eden Medical Center, where he was treated and released. He suffered a broken leg among other injuries.

He was distraught about the horrible crash. He told Patch that his friend Brandon Hughes came to the scene of the accident and stayed with him while they waited for emergency crews to arrive. Without Hughes to console him, Arreola said, he “would have gone completely crazy.”

Anaiss is in second grade at Corpus Christi Salesian School in San Francisco. Principal Sister Cecelia Henry said classmates made get-well cards for Anaiss, which Henry brought to her on Thursday. (See photo.)

Perea said officials ruled out drugs or alcohol as a cause of the accident.

A 9-year-old child died after a Monday off-road vehicle crash in the Johnson Valley Off-Road Recreation Area, about 40 miles east of Victorville. He did not appear to be injured until the following morning, shortly before he died.

•   A child who was riding an all terrain vehicle hit a bumpy patch and fell off the ATV. He did not show any signs of injury and was not in noticeable pain.

•   The following morning, he felt ill and began to vomit. His parents called for help.

•   The boy was rushed to the closest hospital, almost 40 miles away, where he died of internal injuries sustained in the ATV crash.

Victorville ATV Crash LawyersChase Scarbough was camping with his parents at the time of the accident, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Joaquin Zubieta said the boy was driving a quad All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) at normal speeds on Monday morning when he rode over a series of bumps, lost control and was thrown off the vehicle to the ground.

Scarbough was wearing a helmet and safety gear. He did not complain of any serious pain and he did not appear to be injured, his parents said. He did not ride his ATV for the rest of the day, according to a report in the Victorville Daily Press.

Early Tuesday morning, however, the boy vomited after his parents gave him water. They immediately called for help and drove out to Camp Rock Road to meet emergency personnel. Paramedics transported the boy to St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley, where he died from internal injuries he suffered in the ATV crash.

Authorities stressed that anyone who is involved in a motor vehicle accident should seek medical attention immediately, since some injuries may not be apparent right away. This is particularly crucial any time a head injury may have occurred.

A tragic example of the necessity for immediate evaluation was actress Natasha Richardson, who took a mild spill on a Canadian ski slope in March 2009 and declined medical treatment because she “felt fine.” There were no external signs of injury — no bruising, cuts, bleeding, or apparent trauma of any kind.  But after Richardson returned to her hotel room, she got a headache and called for help. By the time she arrived at a hospital, she was unconscious. She had sustained a severe traumatic brain injury. She died a couple of days later in a New York hospital from an epidural hematoma due to blunt impact to the head.

Three teens were seriously injured Sunday afternoon when a newly-licensed 16-year-old driver lost control of her vehicle and plummeted down a steep embankment on Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc.

•  A 16-year-old driver with a provisional license — not legally allowed to transport other teens without a parent or 25-year-old driver — was driving home from the beach with two other teens as passengers.

•  She lost control of her car on a turn, crashed through a guard rail, and tumbled 70 feet down a steep embankment. The car caught fire.

•  One of the teens was in critical condition and had to be airlifted to a hospital. The other two had serious injuries but were in fair condition and were taken to an area hospital by ground ambulance.

The single-car accident occurred at near the intersection of El Rancho and Antenna roads on the north part of the air force base, according to a report in the Lompoc Record.

The teen driver and her two passengers — – a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy — were in a Chevrolet Cobalt returning from Minuteman Beach on the northern tip of the base to the main section of Vandenberg. The driver lost control on a corner near a bridge across some railroad tracks. The car plowed through a guard rail where the roadway meets the bridge, tumbled about 70 feet down a steep embankment, and burst into flames, base officials said.

All three teens apparently managed to escape from the vehicle. One of them sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. The other two also suffered serious injuries but were said to be in fair condition when they were taken by ground ambulance to Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria.

“They are extremely fortunate to be alive,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Cox,who is investigating the accident.

Air Force officials said the driver had a provisional California driver’s license that was issued about a month ago. Under state law, she is not allowed to transport passengers under 20 years old when not accompanied by a parent, guardian or other licensed driver at least 25 years old.

All three teens, whose names were not released, are dependent children of base personnel, officials said. One of them is the child of a military family, while the other two are children of civil servants who work at the base.
