Santa Cruz Accident Lawyers | Driver Arrested for Intentional Crash

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

A 51-year-old driver was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with purposely crashing into another vehicle on Highway 1 near Santa Cruz, California.

Donald Lucas Lee’s truck collided into another vehicle shortly after 4 p.m. and he allegedly yelled threats at the driver of the other vehicle and brandished a handgun, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News. The driver called 911 to report the car accident, but Lee drove away. The driver gave officers a description of Lee’s pickup truck and his license plate number.

More than five hours later, at around 9:45 p.m., someone else called 911 and reported a man passed out in a pickup truck parked at a nearby beach. It matched the description of Lee’s truck. California Highway Patrol officers went to the scene and arrested Lee on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, possessing an illegal gun and a concealed weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon, according to CHP officer Sarah Jackson.

Authorities explained that the deadly weapon in the assault was Lee’s truck because they believe he intentionally crashed into the other vehicle.

Turlock Truck Accident Lawyers | Man Missing After Fatal Crash

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Turlock Truck Accident Lawyers report that on Tuesday, April 27, emergency crews continued to look for a person believed to be a passenger in a Chevrolet Silverado pickup that crashed into a Honda Accord on Highway 85 in Porterville Monday evening.  One driver was killed from multiple blunt injuries sustained in the crash.  Injured in the crash were two men in the Honda who were taken to a local hospital. One man was released with torn tendons in his right hand; he will require surgery. The other man remains in the hospital, according to coverage in the Visalia Times-Delta.

Emergency crews continued their search because evidence from the crash scene suggested someone might have been ejected from the pickup into a nearby canal during the collision. Furthermore, family members of the deceased said that a 34-year old Porterville man was last seen with the driver and has not been heard from since.

Palo Alto Spinal Cord Injury Lawyers | Diabetes drug could halt damage from spinal cord injuries

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

A new study reported in the Science Translational Medicine journal last week says a generic diabetes drug used in conjunction with a gene-blocking drug may be able to stop spinal cord injuries from getting worse and causing paralysis after the initial onset.

The procedure works by stopping the bleeding that occurs when capillaries burst after a brain or spinal cord injury, Marc Simard of the University of Maryland told Reuters. The blood carries chemicals called inflammatory factors that are meant to heal but often increase the damage. That’s why patients can appear to be OK after a traumatic brain injury or a stroke, but then get much worse or even die a few hours later.

In lab experiments with mice and rats, Simard’s team has been able to successfully block the ABCC8 gene that starts the post-injury bleeding process. They used the diabetes drug glyburide and a gene-blocking drug together. The next step is to try it on people.

“I think we are pretty darn close to a clinical trial,” Simard told Reuters.

Glyburide is already in Phase I safety trials for treating traumatic brain injury and stroke, Simard said.

Redwood City Motorcycle Accident Lawyers | Motorcycle officer injured chasing vandals

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

A Redwood City motorcycle police officer was injured Friday night when he hit a car while chasing suspected vandals who were running from another officer on foot, according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News. An eyewitness said Officer Jim Bertellotti was heading east when he hit a northbound car at an intersection without stop signs. The motorcycle hit the car in the side and then flew about 25 feet, according to the witness.

Bertellotti, a 10-year veteran of the Redwood City Police Department, could not speak and was breathing very fast at the scene of the motorcycle accident, according to the report. He was taken to Stanford Hospital with what appeared to be severe injuries. He was complaining of neck and back pain, the initial report stated. The injuries turned out to be minor, however, and Bertellotti was released a few hours later, according to a Mercury News update. No one in the other vehicle was hurt.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident to determine whether Bertellotti had his lights and siren on, how fast he and the other vehicle were going, and who was at fault.
