Roseville Injury Lawyers | 8-Year-Old Boy Killed in Woodland Forklift Accident

Monday, August 16th, 2010

forkliftAn 8-year-old boy was killed Sunday in a forklift accident at his father’s workplace in Woodland, California.

Patrick Trafican brought his son Joseph Trafican to work with him at PT Welding on Tanforan Avenue, according to ABC 10 News. The accident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m., when Jospeh was standing in the parking lot. A forklift that was passing by hit the boy and seriously injured him.

The boy was rushed to Woodland Memorial Hospital, but he died there from his injuries. Police said the Calilfornia Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) was notified about the deadly  accident.

The Yolo County coroner said Monday that the boy’s cause of death was compression asphyxia or suffocation, according to preliminary results of his autopsy. Compression asphyxia can occur when someone’s chest or abdomen is crushed under a large weight or force, such as the forklift.

Federal statistics show there are about 85 forklift fatalities and 35,000 serious injuries per year, according to Safety News Alert. The main causes of forklift fatalities are:

  • tip-overs (42%)
  • crushed between forklift and a surface (25%)
  • crushed between forklift and another vehicle (11%)
  • struck or run over by a forklift (10%)
  • struck by falling material (8%), and
  • fall from platform on the forks (4%).

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) case studies indicate that the forklift itself, the factory environment, and actions of the operator can cause fatal accidents. NIOSH research also indicates that many workers and employers are not using — and may not even be properly trained in — proper forklift safety procedures to reduce the risk of injury and death.

Santa Cruz Accident Lawyers | Worker Sucked Into Wood Chipper

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

A Santa Cruz County maintenance worker who was clearing trees and brush died Monday morning after he was somehow sucked into a wood chipper on a work site in Watsonville, California.  Other crew members who witnessed the horrific accident were “pretty shaken” by 60-year-old Henry Lira’s death, county spokeswoman Dinah Phillip told the San Jose Mercury News. ”He’d been here a long time,” Phillip said.

The county sent a Mental Health Crisis Team to counsel and console the crew, witnesses, and other people who were in in way involved with the accident.

The county has not said what caused the fatal work site accident or how it occurred, but the Public Works Department, Sheriff’s Office and California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA) are investigating. Sgt. Bill Gazza of the county Sheriff’s Office said only that Lira “got somehow entangled with a wood chipper and caught up in it, and now he’s deceased.”

Santa Cruz County issued a simple statement that did not address the details of the incident:

“We are very sorry to announce the death of a long time County employee who died this morning in a tragic accident. We are deeply saddened by this incident, and our hearts and condolences go out to family and friends.”

UPDATE: Henry Lira’s family told the San Jose Mercury-News that he lost one arm and the other was badly mangled on the job 25 years ago when a crane hit a power line.

Orinda Injury Lawyers | Window Washers’ Cherry Picker Hits Power Line

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Two window washers were hospitalized with severe burn injuries Saturday after their cherry picker hit a high-voltage line in Orinda, California. They were cleaning windows at a three-story office building. The jolt from the 150,000-volt power line was so strong it set one of the men on fire, according to a KTVU News report.

Dozens of people shopping at a nearby farmers market saw the accident.  Some of them were outraged at how long it took rescue teams to help the severely injured men.

“Those guys were up there burning, in a state of shock for close to an hour before they got a ladder to them and pulled them down,” said Russell Abraham.

Lt. Eric Navarro of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said it took 35 minutes before rescuers even began their attempt to get the injured men down to the ground so they could be airlifted to a hospital. Fire officials later admitted it took quite a while to bring a ladder truck across town and when they arrived at the scene they waited to make sure the downed power lines were shut off. Moraga Orinda Fire District Battalion Chief Darrell Lee said he had to wait for PG&E to confirm that the line was no longer “live” because he did not want to risk firefighters being injured or even killed.

The window washers were eventually airlifted to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center burn unit, where a nurse said they were in “very critical” condition, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Cal-OSHA is investigating the incident. Orinda’s Police Chief told KTVU the accident was clearly an OSHA violation because the cherry picker was  far too close to the power lines.
