The second San Diego-area plane crash in less than a week killed one passenger and critically injured four others on Monday.
The home-built, single-engine Velocity plane lost a door shortly after takeoff and crashed onto the 11th hole of the north course at Admiral Baker Golf Course at about 12:45 p.m., according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report. The plane then bounced, hit the course again, and landed upside down about 120 yards from where it first hit.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman Ian Gregor said the pilot radioed the control tower just minutes after the plane took off to report the open door. He said he was going to try to return to the airport; the tower then lost contact.
A woman on board was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Two children were airlifted to Rady Children’s Hospital and another was taken there by ground ambulance. A man was taken by ground ambulance to Sharp Memorial Hospital. All were said to be in critical condition.
Rescue workers were not able to determine who had been piloting the plane because it was crushed on all sides from the impact. The FAA is investigating the crash.
