A pilot and passenger were hospitalized after a small plane crash Friday at the Dinsmore Airport in Humboldt County. The remote airstrip is about 60 miles southeast of Eureka.

•   A flight instructor and a student were attempting to land a small plane at a remote Humboldt County airstrip when the plane stalled and nosedived.

•   Nearby Caltrans workers pulled the two men out of the plane before it caught fire.

•  The pilot was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries. The student sustained minor injuries.

The accident occurred at 12:27 p.m., according to a report in the Redding Record Searchlight.

Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey said the six-seat Cessna 172 aircraft, piloted by a 65-year-old flight instructor from Garberville, stalled as it tried to land at the Dinsmore Airport.

Humboldt County Plane Crash LawyerThe plane nosedived and crashed on the airstrip next to Highway 36.

Caltrans crews working onthe highway heard and saw the crash, Downey said. They rushed over to the plane and were able to help the pilot and his passenger get out of the plane before it burst into flames.

The pilot suffered major injuries to his face as well as a broken leg. He was airlifted by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. The passenger, a 30-year-old male student pilot from Redway, suffered minor injuries. It was not clear if he was taken to a hospital to be treated or if he was treated at the scene and then released.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Small Plane Crash Statistics

There were 1,435 small plane crashes nationwide in 2010, according to the latest National Transportation Safety Board(NTSB) statistics.

Almost 20 percent of those aviation accidents — 267 — were fatal, causing 450 deaths.

The number of crashes had decreased considerably since 2000, when there 1,837 crashes resulted in 596 fatalities. The accident and death rate has continually decreased every year.

Berkeley: Teen Skateboarder Struck, Killed in Dangerous Intersection

A teen skateboarder was struck and killed in Berkeley.

Skateboard fatality: An 18-year-old skateboarder died Wednesday after being struck by a Prius in a dangerous intersection in Berkeley on Monday night.

•   An 18-year-old skateboarder was hit by a Prius in a dark, dangerous intersection.

•   He suffered a severe head injury and died two days later.

•   Under California law, skateboarders are considered pedestrians.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday, according to a report in Berkeley’s Daily Californian.

Berkeley police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said Tyler DeMartini, who lived in Berkeley and attended at El Cerrito High School, was riding his skateboard westbound on Marin Avenue at the time of the accident.

DeMartini was crossing Tulare Avenue when an eastbound Prius, driven by a 54-year-old Berkeley man,  turned left onto Tulare Avenue and struck the teen skateboarder. Police did not say how fast the Prius was traveling or whether it was within the posted speed limit.

DeMartini, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered a severe head injury. He was rushed to the Level II emergency/trauma center at Highland Hospital in Oakland in critical condition. He died in the hospital on Wednesday.

The Berkeley Police Department called in a special team to investigate the fatal accident, Kusmiss told the El Cerrito Patch  news site.

“Due to the seriousness of the collision, BPD’s FAIT (Fatal Accident Investigation Team) was called in to take over the investigation,” Kusmiss said. “The FAIT team, members of BPD’s Traffic Bureau, investigates serious and fatal collisions and have extensive training in many disciplines related to collision, diagramming and reconstruction. It is too early in the investigation of this collision to determine the PCF — Primary Collision Factor — which is assigned to a party and in most cases attributes fault to the party.”

After the preliminary investigation police said DeMartini would likely be faulted because skateboarders are supposed to use the sidewalk instead of the street, according to the Daily Cal report. Under California law, skateboarders are deemed pedestrians.

“No pedestrian may walk upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district otherwise than close to his or her left-hand edge of the roadway,” the police press release stated, citing part of the California Vehicle Code.

But many neighbors say the intersection at Marin and Tulare avenues is extremely dangerous to pedestrians, skateboarders, and bicyclists due to a combination of factors: It is very dark and poorly lighted, cars speed over the limit, and it is a blind turn.

The Berkeley Patch news site reported:

“Even with traffic calming measures, cars still speed,” said Marcy Greenhut on the Berkeley Patch Facebook page.

Mary Nicely added that she lives three doors down from the intersection and never crosses there, no matter what time of day. “People drive too fast and it is dark as hell at night,” she said, adding that she has complained to the Berkeley Public Works Department about the lack of lighting — to no avail.

Krista Miller, who lives on Tulare Avenue, says that she and her two children have caused two fender benders crossing the intersection in the past six months. Speeding cars were too close to one another or speeding, she says, and therefore unprepared to stop.

Miller’s husband, Ryan Smith, says that he spoke to the Berkeley Police Department about the dangers of the intersection and was told to take the matter to the city council.

The news site included a video to illustrate the problems:

Nevada City: Landscape Worker Dies in Wood Chipper Accident

Tree service worker Martin Lara was killed in a wood chipper accident in Nevada City.

A 50-year-old landscape worker was killed on the job Thursday when he fell into a wood chipper in Nevada City.

•   A professional landscape worker was clearing brush in a Nevada City home when a nearby bundle of wood got sucked into a wood chipper.

•   A rope that was tied around the wood somehow got tangled around the worker’s neck and started pulling him into the chipper.

•  Workers heard him screaming for help and ran to assist him. They turned off the machine but the victim had already been decapitated and died.

•  Investigators said it was a tragic accident.

The fatal accident occurred at about 8:15 a.m., according to a report in the Union, a Nevada County newspaper.

Nevada County Chief Deputy Coroner Paul Schmidt said Applegate resident Martin Lara was working at a home on Indian Shack Road when the tragic accident happened.

Lara was working for a company called Bushwackers, which had been hired by the homeowner to clear brush.

Schmidt said Lara was feeding yard debris into a wood chipper. A rope was tied around a bundle of wood that was being pulled by the chipper. Somehow the rope got caught in the wood chipper and then got tangled around Lara’s neck.

Lara screamed for help and his coworkers ran to assist him, but by the time they got to him it was too late, CBS News reported. He already had died. He had been decapitated, either by the rope, clothing or brush.

When the other workers arrived, Lara’s body was being pulled into the cone of the wood chipper, but a co-worker immediately pulled a lever to stop the machine. The deceased man’s body did not go all the way into the machine, despite erroneous reports to the contrary.

Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Hap Penaluna said the huge wood chipper was big enough to process full-size trees. He called Lara’s death a tragic accident.

“It’s just horrific,” Penaluna said.

The entire community was shocked and saddened by the tragedy.

“I don’t know how that could have happened,” said Trees Unlimited owner Jim Norman. He said he planned to talk to his 10 employees in the wake of the accident. “It brings tears to my eyes.”

Brian Bixler, a wood chipper operator, told the Los Angeles Times that the machines create a force that sucks brush in and it can be impossible to escape unless a worker’s hand is on a shut-off switch.

“If it gets you and you don’t have control of this bar, then there is no way of stopping it,” he said.

Marina: Teen Killed in Rollover Crash on Reservation Road

A 190year-old boy was killed in a head-on car crash in Monterey County.

A teen driver was killed in a car accident Sunday night on Reservation Road in Marina, about 12 miles north of Monterey. The other teen driver was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

•   A teen driver in a Honda Accord was speeding on a divided road when he lost control of his vehicle and skidded into the oncoming traffic lane.

•  The Accord hit the driver’s side of a Subaru Impreza, knocking into the air. The Subaru flipped over and landed on its roof.

•   The driver of the Subaru, also a teen, died at the scene.

•   The Accord driver was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. The CHP had not yet decided whether it would recommend criminal charges.

The fatal accident occurred at about 7:20 p.m., according to a report in the Monterey Herald.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Robert Lehman said 18-year-old Monterey resident Jared Holehouse was driving a silver 2003 Honda Accord eastbound on Reservation Road at the time of the crash.

Holehouse was traveling at high speed when he lost control of his car. It skidded over a raised median that divides the heavily traveled road where it intersects with West Blanco Road, according to a KSBW Channel 8 News report.

The Honda slammed into the driver’s side door of a black 2006 Subaru Impreza that was traveling westbound on Reservation Road. The impact launched the Subaru into the air. It rolled over and landed on its roof. The driver, 19-year-old Alexander Ratliff of Salinas, died at the scene.

Holehouse sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted via helicopter to San Jose Regional Medical Center for treatment, Lehman said. The exact nature and severity of his injuries was not released.

There were no passengers in either car.

Lehman said drugs and alcohol were not involved in the accident. He said investigators believe it was Holehouse’s excessive driving speed that led to the crash.

As of Monday afternoon, the CHP had not yet decided whether it would suggest that criminal charges be filed against Holehouse, according to a report in the Salinas Californian.

Car Accidents Deadly for Teens

Car accidents are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Drivers aged 16 to 19 years old have the highest average annual crash and traffic violation rates of any age group. California is second only to Texas in the number of teen deaths in traffic accidents.

Why are teen drivers at so much risk? According to the DMV, these are the greatest factors:

  • Poor hazard detection – Teens are still inexperienced as drivers so they haven’t fully developed the ability to assess potential hazards.
  • Low risk perception – Teen drivers tend to underestimate risk and overestimate their driving ability.
  • Risk taking - Teens tend to engage in risky behaviors such as speeding, tailgating, running red lights, violating traffic signs and signals, making illegal turns, passing dangerously, and failure to yield to pedestrians.
  • Not wearing seat belts - Teens are less likely than older drivers to wear seat belts.
  • Lack of skill - Despite their overconfidence, teens are still inexperienced drivers.
  • Alcohol and drugs - Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is a common cause of fatal crashes involving teen drivers.
  • Night driving - The per-mile crash rate for teen drivers is three times higher after 9 p.m.

A 22-year-old man was charged with felony drunk driving and manslaughter Friday night after a violent single-vehicle car accident on Interstate 5 in Woodland killed one of his passengers. The other two passengers suffered major injuries.

•   A 22-year-old drunk driver lost control of his vehicle as he exited the freeway.

•   The car flipped over and rolled several times, ejecting all three passengers. All of them were in their early 20s.

•   One of the passengers died at the scene. The other two were hospitalized with major injuries.

•   The drunk driver was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries. He was later arrested and charged with felony DUI and manslaughter.

The fatal DUI crash occurred at 9:44 p.m., according to a report in the Woodland Daily Democrat.

The California Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation revealed that Ryan S. Baird of Sacramento was driving a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse southbound on I-5 at the time of the accident.

Woodland Car Accident LawyerBaird lost control of the vehicle on the on the County Road 102 off-ramp at an unknown rate of speed. The car veered onto the shoulder, flipped over, and rolled several times before it landed upside down, on its roof.

None of the three passengers were wearing seat belts. All of them were ejected from the vehicle when it rolled.

Emergency crews from the CHP, Woodland Fire Department, Woodland Police Department and Yolo County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene within a couple of minutes.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate passenger Robert Dale Sunderland III, a 25-year-old Woodland resident, but he died at the scene.

Passenger Saeed Rodriguez, a 22-year-old Woodland resident, suffered a broken arm and a head injury. Passenger James D. L. Black, a 21-year-old who also is a Woodland resident, suffered a broken leg. They were taken to U.C. Davis Medical Center to be treated.

Baird suffered multiple facial lacerations. He also was taken to U.C. Davis Medical Center. Early reports indicated that he was flown by helicopter to the hospital. It was not clear whether the two surviving passengers were flown to the hospital or transported via ground ambulance.

CHP officers later arrested Baird. He was charged with at least two felonies, including driving under the influence and manslaughter.

Woodland is about 17 miles northwest of Sacramento.

Fatal Drunk Driving Accident Statistics

Almost 11,000 people die every year in drunk driving car accidents on U.S. roads, according to federal government statistics published by the non-profit group Alcohol Alert.  Drunk driving deaths account for more than a third of all U.S. traffic fatalities.

Many people believe drunk drivers fare better than their victims on the road, but that is not true. Almost two-thirds of those who are killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes are drunk drivers.

Drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes are typically not first-time offenders. Statistics show they are eight times more likely to have a prior drunk driving conviction than other drivers involved in fatal accidents.

More than half of drunk drivers involved in fatal accidents have levels of alcohol in their blood that are twice the legal limit — or more.
