Virginia police pulled over U.S. Representative Dan Lungren (R-California) Friday for speeding and had to tell him to hang up his phone in order to get a word in edgewise.
The Republican congressman was doing an interview with Sacramento radio station KBFK while driving to his Washington office, according to CNN. He did not have a hands-free system, as is required by law in his home state. He told KBHK the phone was in his lap. He also said he was driving “probably just slightly over the speed limit.”
When the interview began, the officer could be heard in the background, sternly admonishing Lungren to hang up the phone. The congressman excused himself from the interview but called back just a few seconds later to continue.
Lungren was released with a warning. It is not illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving in Virginia, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. The National Safety Council estimates that at least 1.4 million car accidents are caused each year by drivers talking on cell phones.
