Half Moon Bay: Alcohol Likely Involved in Fatal Rollover Crash

Fatal Rollover Crash: A woman was killed when her sports car rolled over on Verde Road near Half Moon Bay.

Authorities believe alcohol was a probably a factor in a single-vehicle car accident that killed a woman Monday afternoon when her car flipped over near Half Moon Bay.

•   A 54-year-old woman left a friend’s house in a small sports car and never made it home.

•   The car veered to the right, and then the woman overcorrected to the left and lost control of the car.

•   The car went off the road, flipped over, and landed upside down. The woman suffered a severe head injury and died at the scene.

•   Police believe alcohol was a factor.

The fatal rollover crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m., according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

California Highway Patrol officer Art Montiel said 54-year-old Gail A. Burnett, a resident of Half Moon Bay, was driving her 1971 MG convertible home from a friend’s house at the time of the crash.

Half Moon Bay Car Accident AttorneysBurnett was supposed to meet another friend, according to a report in the Half Moon Bay Review. But she never arrived.

She was driving northbound on Verde Road — a rural road east of coastal Highway 1 – when her car drifted to the right. Police believe she overcorrected to the left and lost control of the vehicle. The car went off of the road and then rolled over, landing upside down, Monteil said.

When Burnett didn’t arrive home, her friend who was waiting for her started walking down Verde Road to see what had happened. The friend discovered the crash scene south of Purisma Creek immediately called 911 for help.

Burnett suffered severe head injuries that proved to be fatal. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the fatal accident, but they could not make a definite determination until the results of toxicology tests were released.

Monteil said the victim was wearing a seat belt.

Drunk Driving Statistics

Every 48 minutes someone in  the United States dies in a motor vehicle accident that involves an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Motorcyclists, people under 25, and drivers with prior DUI convictions are at greatest risk.

Here are the CDC’s numbers to show how big the problem really is:

  • In 2009, 10,839 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for a third (32 percent) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.
  • Among the 1,314 traffic-related deaths among children (under age 14), 181 involved an alcohol-impaired driver.
  • Half of those 181 children who died in alcohol-related accidents were riding in the vehicle with the drunk driver.
  • In 2009, over 1.4 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. That’s less than one percent of the 147 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year.
  • Drugs other than alcohol (e.g., marijuana and cocaine) are involved in about 18 percent of motor vehicle driver deaths. These other drugs are often used in combination with alcohol.

It is never safe to drink and drive.

“Biggest Loser” star Sam Poueu suffered critical injuries when he fell from a four-story building in San Francisco.

“Biggest Loser” star Sam Poueu made headlines last week when he was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries after he fell from a four-story building in San Francisco.

No one knew how he fell or what he was doing at the building until his family issued a statement today in People magazine.

•    Sam Poueu, who lost 134 pounds on season nine of the NBC hit show “Biggest Loser,” got stranded on the rooftop of a friend’s apartment building when the door slammed shut — and locked — behind him.

•     The popular 25-year-old reality star tried to climb down a fire escape but he slipped and fell to the sidewalk below.

•     He suffered a severe pelvic and head injuries, multiple internal injuries, a punctured long, broken leg, and torn ligaments.

The slip-and-fall accident occurred on September 3.

Poueu, who lost 134 pounds on season nine of the hit NBC show, had gone to dinner to celebrate a friend’s birthday, according to a joint statement issued to People by his family and fiancée Stephanie Anderson’s family. Anderson also was a “Biggest Loser” season nine contestant.

After dinner, 25-year-old Poueu went up to the rooftop of another friend’s apartment — and the door slammed shut and locked behind him.

Poueu “attempted to climb down the fire escape ladder to drop down into the fourth floor balcony and slipped,” the families’ statement said.

A neighbor called 911. San Francisco Fire Department paramedics responded immediately and found Poueu in critical condition with a severe head injury and “many serious internal injuries,” according to the statement.

E! News reported: “The popular reality star sustained severe injuries to his head and pelvis, torn ligaments, a punctured lung and a broken leg, but remained conscious.”

Poueu already has undergone three surgeries since being admitted to the hospital. The families have set up a trust fund to help pay for the massive expenses he faces during what is expected to be a long recovery.

TV Tip-Over: A 7-year-old girl died Tuesday after she was hit by a falling TV at Our Lady of Lourdes church in Colusa, about 65 miles northwest of Sacramento. The girl’s brother watched helplessly as his sister suffered the fatal head injury.

•  Two young children were watching TV alone in a church conference room while their mother did some volunteer work on the premises.

•   The little girl attempted to turn the TV so they could see it better, but the television tipped over and fell on her. It struck her head and inflicted a severe head injury.

•   Paramedics rushed the little girl to a nearby hospital but she did not survive. The coroner ruled that her death was caused by blunt force head injury.

Colusa Accident LawyersThe deadly accident occurred at about 1 p.m., according to a report in the Sacramento Bee.

The little girl — later identified as Kateri Meraz — was in a conference room with her brother at the time of the accident. Their mother was doing some volunteer work elsewhere on the premises, police said.

There were no adults in the room with the children.

The television was sitting on a cart. Authorities believe the girl was trying to turn the cart so she and her brother could see better when the television tumbled off the cart and fell on her, striking her head, according to the Appeal-Democrat.

Colusa police Chief Ross Stark said emergency personnel found the girl unconscious with “severe head trauma.” She was rushed to Colusa Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Lt. Shane Maxey of the Colusa County Sheriff’s Department told the Bee that the coroner ruled the cause of death to be blunt force head injury.

The girl’s parents, Dr. Antonio Meraz and Rocio Meraz, are active members of the church.

TV Tip-Over Deaths and Injuries

In the U.S., at least one child dies every two weeks from injuries they suffer when a television, piece of furniture, or an appliance tips over and falls on them, according to the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Another 16,000 children 5 years old and younger are treated in emergency rooms because of tip-over injuries. The problem is so great that the federal government issued a warning about it in 2007 and outlined voluntary safety standards.

The CPSC suggests these safety tips to protect your children from potentially deadly tip-over accidents:

  • Furniture should be stable on its own. For added security, anchor chests or dressers, TV stands, bookcases, and entertainment units to the floor or attach to a wall.
  • Place TVs on a sturdy, low-rise base. Avoid flimsy shelves.
  • Push the TV as far back as possible.
  • Keep remote controls and other attractive items off the TV stand so kids won’t be tempted to grab for them and risk knocking the TV over.
  • Make sure free-standing ranges and stoves are installed with anti-tip brackets.

“Large TVs and unstable furniture can be a deadly combination. Taking simple, low-cost steps to secure furniture and TVs can save lives,” CPSC chairperson Inez Tenenbaum said in a 2007 statement. “Parents need to know about this hidden danger and take action now.”

A reckless driver caused a chain-reaction car accident Monday on Interstate 80 in Vacaville. It resulted in major injuries to a mother and her two children.

•   Several motorists called 911 to report that a reckless driver was reaching speeds over 100 mph on the freeway.

•   Moments later, the driver rear-ended a car and caused a chain-reaction accident involving four vehicles.

•   One of the vehicles was a minivan that flipped over and landed on its roof.

The minivan driver suffered critical head injuries. Her two teenage children also were seriously injured.

Vacaville Car Accident AttorneysThe freeway crash occurred at about 8:20 p.m., according to an article in the Vacaville Reporter.

California Highway Patrol officer Julie Saraiva said witnesses called 911 right before the crash to report that 36-year-old Fredy Herrera of San Leandro was driving his black 2004 Acura recklessly on westbound I-80 near Vacaville. They said he was speeding up to 120 mph.

Just before the Interstate 505 onramp, Herrera rear-ended a silver Honda CR-V driven by Greyson Lanzarotta of Santa Cruz. The impact sent the CR-V out of control. It eventually crashed into a guard rail.

One of the two vehicles crashed into a blue Dodge minivan driven by 42-year-old Kelly Myers. The impact force the minivan into a vehicle that was parked in a Caltrans construction area in the far-left lane, Saraiva said. The minivan flipped over and landed on its roof, while the other vehicle was slammed into a guard rail.

Myers, whose city of residence was not released, suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She remains in critical condition, the Reporter stated in a later update.

Her 14-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter, whose names were not released because they are minors, both suffered moderate injuries and were taken to VacaValley Hospital to be treated. The extent of their injuries was not released, but authorities said one may have suffered a broken jaw.

Lanzarotta sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the scene. Herrera said he was not hurt in the accident.

The accident is still under investigation.

Redwood City Bicycle Accident Lawyers | Driver, Cyclist Both Drunk

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011
Redwood City Bicycle Accident Attorneys
Bicycle Accident: A drunk driver hit a drunk cyclist on El Camino Real near Redwood City.

Redwood City police arrested a drunk driver in a bizarre bicycle accident Saturday night — the cyclist was drunk too. The driver wasn’t hurt but the cyclist was hospitalized with serious injuries.

A drunk driver in a pickup truck and a drunk cyclist were traveling in the same lane — in opposite directions — late at night. The cyclist was wearing dark clothes and had no lights.

The cyclist turned right in front of the pickup truck and was hit. He was hospitalized with serious injuries and cited for riding a bicycle under the influence of alcohol.

The pickup truck driver wasn’t hurt. He was arrested for drunk driving and driving without a license.

Redwood City Bicycle Accident AttorneysThe drunk driving accident occurred at about 11 p.m., according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

California Highway Patrol Officer Amelia Jack said 31-year-old Alejandro Chavez of  Redwood City was riding a bicycle against the direction of traffic in the northbound lane of El Camino Real in unincorporated North Fair Oaks when the collision occurred.

It was dark outside. Chavez had no lights on his bicycle. He was wearing dark clothing. And, as it turned out, he was under the influence of alcohol.

At the same time, 40-year-old Jose Luna, also a Redwood City resident, was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck north in the same lane on El Camino Real.  Luna also was under the influence of alcohol, Jack said.

As the bicycle and the pickup truck approached Berkshire Avenue — from opposite directions in the same lane — Chavez attempted to turn right onto Berkshire. He turned his bicycle in front of the truck and the truck hit him.

“In my five-and-a-half years on this job, I have not seen this situation before,” Jack told the Mercury News. “Not that it doesn’t happen, but I’ve never had (a case where both drivers are drunk), especially with one being a bicyclist and one being a car.”

Chavez suffered a broken back, broken leg, and head injuries. He was transported to Stanford Medical Center, where he was hospitalized. Luna was not injured.

Chavez was cited for riding a bicycle under the influence of alcohol, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. He faces a fine of $250, according to the California Vehicle Code (Section 21200.5).

Luna was arrested for driving under the influence and driving without a license, Wagstaffe said. He pleaded not guilty on Monday and remains in jail. His trial is set for July 11.

Investigators are still determining who was at fault in the accident.
