An 18-year-old and an 88-year-old woman died in a car accident caused by an unsafe lane change near Orland.

An unsafe lane change on Highway 32 led to a deadly car accident that took the lives of an 18-year-old and an 88-year-old Saturday near Orland.

•   A teen driver was passing a vehicle on a two-lane highway when she saw an oncoming car and tried to quickly dart back into her own lane.

•   She lost control of her vehicle, which spun back into the oncoming traffic lane and crashed into the other vehicle.

•   The teen and an elderly passenger from the other vehicle died at the scene.

•   The teen’s passenger suffered a broken neck and was airlifted to a hospital. The other driver and his surviving passenger were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The fatal highway crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to a report in the Orland Press-Register.

California Highway Patrol officer  Joseph Fischer said 18-year-old Orland resident Tracy Khamorn was driving a white 1993 Toyota eastbound on Highway 32 at an unknown rate of speed at the time of the accident.

Orland Car Accident LawyerHighway 32 is a two-lane rural road. Fischer said Khamorn was driving in the westbound lane to pass a slower vehicle near County Road VV when a westbound 2011 Subaru, driven by 56-year-old Magalia resident David Martinez, approached at about 55 mph.

Khamorn turned the Toyota sharply to the right in order to quickly get back into the eastbound lane, Fischer said. The vehicle veered all the way over to the right shoulder. Khamorn tried to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway but she overcorrected and the car spun back into the westbound lane and crashed into Martinez’s Subaru.

The Toyota remained upright, but the Subaru rolled over onto the passenger side, where 88-year-old Magalia resident Elizabeth Bower was sitting.

Khamorn and Bower died at the scene.

Khamorn’s passenger, 18-year-old Robert Thammavong, also of Orland, suffered a broken neck, according to a report in the Chico Enterprise-Record.  He was airlifted by helicopter to Enloe Medical Center in Chico.

Martinez and his surviving passenger, 52-year-old Deanna Martinez, also of Magalia, sustained lesser injuries and were taken to Enloe Medical Center by ground ambulance.

The accident is still under investigation, according to the CHP.

The Dangers of Rural Highways

Only 23 percent of the U.S. population lives in rural areas, but 57 percent of all motor vehicle accident fatalities occur on rural roads, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NHTSA’s latest figures show that the fatality rate per vehicle miles traveled was 2.5 times higher in rural areas than in urban areas.

A large majority of car accident deaths in rural areas — 67 percent — occur on highways, where the speed limit is 55 mph or higher. In urban areas, the opposite is true: 68 percent of all fatal crashes occur on roads where the speed limit is less than 50 mph.

Rural highways often are only two lanes, which presents significant danger to motorists who use the oncoming traffic lane to pass at high speed.

Finally, hospitals are few and far between in rural areas. The risk of dying on the way to the hospital is significantly higher in a rural accident than an urban one.

8-Year-Old Boy Recovering After Marin County Motorcycle Accident

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

An 8-year-old boy who was critically injured in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday was airlifted from Marin County to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where his condition is now listed as stable.

•   A 45-year-old man was teaching an 8-year-old boy how to ride a dirt bike in a recreation area parking lot next to a street.

•   The boy lost control of the bike, plowed through the wooden rail at the entrance to the parking lot, was thrown of the motorcycle, and landed on the paved shoulder of the street. The bike kept moving into traffic and was hit by a pickup truck.

•   The boy suffered life-threatening injuries. He was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where he was in critical but stable condition.

The accident occurred at about 4:15 p.m. in Inverness, according to a report in the Marin Independent Journal.

California Highway Patrol officer Christopher Rardin said the boy, whose name was not released, was learning to ride a dirt bike under the supervision of a 45-year-old man who lives in Point Reyes Station. They were practicing near the parking lot of White House Pool, a 22-acre natural area on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

Rardin said the boy lost control of the bike, plunged through a wooden rail fence at the entrance of the parking lot entrance and landed on the paved shoulder of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The motorcycle continued into the westbound lane traffic lane, where it was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by a 74-year-old Sebastopol man.

Early reports had said the boy was on the motorcycle when it was hit head-on by the truck, but Rardin said that is not what happened. He emphasized that the boy was already off of the motorcycle when it was hit.

The 8-year-old boy suffered critical injuries, including a fractured pelvis and abrasions on his side, according to a report in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.  He was airlifted by a REACH helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Oakland. Rardin said his injuries were life-threatening. The boy was reported to be in critical but stable condition on Thursday morning, Rardin said.

Children in Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycle crashes are a substantial public health problem for children and teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

An estimated 23,800 children and teens (age 18 and under) are treated for nonfatal off-road motorcycle injuries in U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year, the CDC said. The agency arrived at those numbers by analyzing data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program (NEISS-AIP) for a five-year period ending in 2004.

That staggering number of injuries doesn’t even include three- or four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). The victim count included only injuries sustained on road bikes, dirt bikes (or trail bikes), mopeds, motor scooters, and minibikes.

The CDC stressed that there are probably far more injuries than these numbers state, because the data only accounts for people treated in hospital emergency rooms. It does not include victims who are treated in their doctor’s offices or other health care facilities. Nor does it include the considerable number of chldren who are treated at home or not at all.

Dixon: 5 Special Ed Students Hurt When School Bus Crashes Into Tractor

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Five special needs students were injured Wednesday when their school bus crashed and rolled over after the driver attempted to pass a tractor in a no-passing zone in rural Dixon, about 22 miles west of Sacramento.

•   A school bus carrying special needs students was behind a tractor on a country road. The driver crossed a double yellow line  – a no-passing zone — to try to pass the tractor.

•   The tractor had already started to turn left, but the bus driver was unable to get the school bus back into its lane. The bus hit the back of the tractor, rode up on the rear wheel, and rolled over.

•   All five of the students were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. The bus driver suffered moderate injuries. The tractor driver was not hurt.

The accident occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to a report in the Vacaville Reporter.

California Highway Patrol officer Chris Parker said the bus — driven by 55-year-old Michael Snyder, of Michael’s Transportation in Vallejo — was traveling east on Hackman Road at the time of the accident.

The school bus came up behind an eastbound John Deere 8130 tractor — driven by 29-year-old Catarino De La Torre Delgadillo, of Gene Robben Farms in Dixon.

Parker told ABC News that witnesses estimated the tractor’s speed at about 20 mph, while the bus was traveling at about 35 mph. The tractor had its hazard lights on.

Snyder drove the bus across a double yellow line to pass the tractor, apparently not realizing that the tractor was slowing down to turn. As the tractor started to turn, Snyder tried to get back into the eastbound lane, but the right front end of the bus struck the left rear tire of the tractor, Parker said.

The bus rode up onto the tractor tire and then rolled over onto its side. The tractor was pushed into a power pole and veered off of the road and into an agricultural field, where it came to a stop. The collision with the utility pole knocked out power to about 12 homes in the area.

Witness Dell Donovan saw the accident from a field next to the road, according to a KCRA News report. He ran over to the bus and saw that Snyder already had gotten out of his seat and helping his passengers.  Donovan said he and the tractor driver smashed out a window to help the students who were hanging by their seat belts.

“The ones that were more upset were the ones that were trapped kind of sideways with the seat belt across them,” Donovan said. “We had to raise them up and unbuckle the seat belt.”

The students were young adults ranging in age from 16 to 22, investigators said. They were taken to three area hospitals to be treated for injuries that were described as minor. The exact nature and extent of their injuries was not known.

The bus driver was transported to Sutter Davis Hospital with moderate injuries. Witnesses said he had a large gash on his head. The tractor driver did not report any injuries.

Dixon Unified School District interim superintendent Brian Dolon said he is awaiting the results of the California Highway Patrol investigation into the crash, but he said the preliminary findings were alarming.

“Especially when it’s your more-vulnerable students you are talking about,” Dolon said. “We absolutely expect that somebody who is caring for them would do everything they can to keep them safe.”

A disabled 5-year-old girl was seriously injured when a drunk driver drove off the road and crashed into her bedroom while she was sleeping early Friday morning in Lodi.

•  A 21-year-old drunk driver turned a corner onto his street but was not able to navigate it. He crashed through a neighbor’s fence, skidded across the lawn, and plowed through the wall and window of a sleeping 5-year-old’s bedroom.

•  The little girl, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, suffered at least a broken leg as a result of the accident.

•  The drunk driver fled the scene. Police caught him at his residence, two blocks away, and arrested him on charges of felony DUI, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving.

The hit-and-run accident occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m., according to a report in the Lodi News-Sentinel.

Lodi Police Department spokesperson Dale Eubanks said 21-year-old Jeffery Kenneth Dobretz, who lives two blocks away from the house he crashed into, skidded off the road after turning a corner onto Pinot Noir Drive.

“He made a wide left turn coming off Reisling Drive, smashed through a fence and into the girl’s room,” Eubanks told the News-Sentinel. “The mom heard the noise and saw the pickup backing away from the room.”

The impact forced the little girl’s bed across the room and into an adjacent wall, according to a KCRA News report. The  girl’s leg was broken. She was taken to U.C. Davis Medical Center, where she is being treated for a fracture to her left femur, police said.

The 5-year-old victim, whose identity was not released, is disabled and uses a wheelchair. There was no speculation as to how the injury might affect her disability or whether her disability might make it more difficult to recover from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

After he smashed the house, Dobretz slammed his red Chevrolet pickup truck into reverse and gunned the motor gunned as the tires spun on the grass. He backed the truck off of the lawn and then sped away, witnesses said.

Police found the truck parked in front of Dobretz’s residence, two blocks away. He tried to hop the back fence to escape from police officers but was too drunk to do so, Eubanks said.

Police arrested Dobretz and on charges of felony drunk driving, reckless driving, and felony hit-and-run, according to the KCRA report.

Construction workers put up a wooden barrier across the damaged area of the house to protect the bedroom from further damage and from burglars, who could have gained access to the home through the broken wall and window.

Three people were hospitalized Sunday with serious injuries stemming from a drunk driving accident on Interstate 5 near Orland.

•  A drunk driver who was speeding on a rural section on Interstate 5 at over 100 mph slammed into a vehicle in front of her without even trying to change lanes to avoid the crash.

•   The car she hit went off the freeway and rolled over. All three occupants were hospitalized with serious injuries.

•   The drunk driver’s car also went off the freeway. She escaped with minor injuries just before it burst into flames.

•   The drunk driver was charged with felony DUI and jailed with $80,000 bail.

Orland Car Accident AttorneysThe freeway crash occurred at about 2:25 a.m., according to a report in the Orland Press Register.

The California Highway Patrol accident report stated that 39-year-old Jude Tenbear of Colusa was driving a 2006 Pontiac north on I-5 at more then 100 mph when she slammed into a 1991 Toyota from behind. The Toyota was driven by 40-year-old Miguel Chacon of San Francisco.

At such a high speed, the impact was extremely forceful. The Toyota was catapulted off the eastern edge of the freeway, where it plowed through a wire fence and then overturned.

The Pontiac also went totally out of control, careening off the side od the freeway and tearing through the fence before it burst into flames. Tenbear was able to escape from the vehicle before it caught fire.

All three occupants of the Toyota suffered serious injuries and were transported by ambulance to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, 20 miles away.

Chacon suffered a broken back and major lacerations. He was listed in fair condition on Monday. One of Chacon’s passengers, 28-year-old Wendy Vasquez of San Francisco, also suffered major lacerations. She was listed in serious condition. A second passenger, 64-year-old Juan Ramires of San Francisco, was treated for injuries but was not listed as a patient on Monday. It is not known if he was released or transferred to another hospital.

Tenbear was treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to the Chico Enterprise-Record. Then she was arrested on felony driving under the influence causing injuries. She was taken into custody and booked in the Glenn County Jail. Her bail was set at $80,000. The CHP report said Tenbear “did not attempt” to change lanes before slamming into Chacon’s vehicle.
