Six people — five adults and one child — were hospitalized with serious injuries Monday morning in a head-on collision caused by bald tires, excessive speed, and rain-slicked roads in Oroville.

•   A motorist in a Camaro with bald tires drove too fast on a wet road and lost control of the vehicle.

•   The Camaro spun out and skidded into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with a pickup truck.

•   All six people in both cars were hospitalized. A 60-year-old passenger in the pickup truck sustained major injuries and was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico.

The car accident occurred at around 11:20 a.m., according to a report in the Oroville Mercury-Register.

California Highway Patrol officer Justin Wallace said 37-year-old Mike Posey was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro south on Lincoln Road when he lost control of the vehicle near Arnold Avenue. The Camaro spun out on the wet road and skidded across the center line into the northbound traffic lane.

The Camero veered directly into the path of an oncoming Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by 30-year-old Miranda Pierson, who was unable to avoid a head-on collision.

Posey was taken to Oroville Hospital with a leg injury. Pierson and two of her four passengers — 39-year-old Christopher Masters and 2-year-old Chase Osbourn — also were transported to Oroville Hospital. Pierson suffered face, neck, and back injuries; Masters suffered a leg injury, and Osborn had cuts on his head.

Another of Pierson’s passengers, 60-year-old Sheila Roberts, was airlifted to Enloe Medical Center in Chico with major injuries. The fourth passenger, 17-year-old Chelsea Masters, sustained neck and back injuries and was transported to Enloe via ground ambulance.

The CHP accident report said Posey was driving “at an unsafe speed for conditions, and due to insufficient tire tread he lost control of the vehicle.”

Officers at the scene administered a sobriety test but and determined that Posey was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“Lethal Weapon” star Gary Busey — who suffered a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury in a 1988 motorcycle accident in which he was not wearing a helmet — dropped his wild-man image last week and came to the rescue at a car accident in Malibu, California.

Malibu police said Busey witnessed two cars colliding on Pacific Coast Highway and rushed to help, according to TMZ and many other sources. The Oscar-nominated actor (“The Buddy Holly Story,” 1978) immediately jumped into the role of Good Samaritan, aiding an injured man and getting an onlooker to call 911 (listen to the call below).

Then Busey helped to slow traffic to keep the people involved in the accident out of harm’s way from oncoming vehicles. He stayed with the injured victim until paramedics arrived to treat him.

Listen to the 911 call, courtesy of TMZ:

What to do if you witness a car accident:

  • Immediately call 911. Do not try to do anything else until you make this call.
  • Pull over to the right when it is safe and stop your vehicle.
  • Stay out of harm’s way. Do not get out of your car unless you are sure it is safe to do so.
  • If someone appears to be injured and it is safe to get out of your car and to approach the victims, let them know help is on the way.
  • Do not move the victims. Moving an injured person can turn a minor injury into a serious one.
  • When authorities arrive, give them your name and contact information.
  • Make notes about what you personally saw in case you are called upon later to provide information.

San Jose Accident Lawyers | Student Driver Hits Pedestrians in Crosswalk

Monday, July 12th, 2010

pedestrianA student driver hit seven pedestrians crossing a street in a crosswalk Sunday in Livermore, California. All of them were injured. One suffered two broken legs and had to undergo surgery on Monday, according to a CBS 5 News report.

The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. at the intersection of Vallecitos and Wetmore roads, police said. The student driver, 20-year-old Farhat Mohammad, was driving a Honda Civic west on Wetmore Road. When she turned left onto Vallecitos Road, the group of seven pedestrians was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. Mohammad hit all seven of them. Police did not say how or why it happened.

The woman who broke both of her legs was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center. She is still in the hospital and is expected to be confined to a wheelchair for at least two months, police said. Two other victims, including one who also suffered a broken leg, were transported by ambulance to Eden Medical Center. All of the pedestrians suffered some sort of injuries.

Mohammad had a valid drivers permit and was with a licensed driver. No alcohol or drugs were involved, police said. The accident is still under investigation. Mohammad has not been charged with a crime.

Orinda Injury Lawyers | Window Washers’ Cherry Picker Hits Power Line

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Two window washers were hospitalized with severe burn injuries Saturday after their cherry picker hit a high-voltage line in Orinda, California. They were cleaning windows at a three-story office building. The jolt from the 150,000-volt power line was so strong it set one of the men on fire, according to a KTVU News report.

Dozens of people shopping at a nearby farmers market saw the accident.  Some of them were outraged at how long it took rescue teams to help the severely injured men.

“Those guys were up there burning, in a state of shock for close to an hour before they got a ladder to them and pulled them down,” said Russell Abraham.

Lt. Eric Navarro of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said it took 35 minutes before rescuers even began their attempt to get the injured men down to the ground so they could be airlifted to a hospital. Fire officials later admitted it took quite a while to bring a ladder truck across town and when they arrived at the scene they waited to make sure the downed power lines were shut off. Moraga Orinda Fire District Battalion Chief Darrell Lee said he had to wait for PG&E to confirm that the line was no longer “live” because he did not want to risk firefighters being injured or even killed.

The window washers were eventually airlifted to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center burn unit, where a nurse said they were in “very critical” condition, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

Cal-OSHA is investigating the incident. Orinda’s Police Chief told KTVU the accident was clearly an OSHA violation because the cherry picker was  far too close to the power lines.

Irvine Spinal Injury Lawyers | One Doctor’s Approach To Treating Spine Injury

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

When Suzy Kim talks, patients with spinal cord injuries listen. She is their doctor, but she also a shining example of how much can be accomplished with early and intensive rehabilitation for spinal cord injuries.

Kim broke her neck body-surfing in 1997 and was initially unable to walk or use her hands, according to a PhysOrg.com news report. Today she directs spinal cord injury programs at the UC Irvine Reeve-Irvine Research Center and UC Irvine Medical Center. She surfs on a board with handles and competes in triathlons using a hand-cycle.  She uses her own success to convince patients to get into  rehab as soon as they are medically stable.

“Patients absolutely love her,” says Reeve-Irvine director Oswald Steward. “People with spinal cord injuries usually go to doctors who don’t have any real understanding of what they’re going through. Suzy does.”

Early therapy works, Kim stresses. Unfortunately, most insurance companies determine rehabilitation coverage by a formula based on bone and muscle injuries, and that isn’t nearly enough for spinal cord injuries.
