Three people were rescued from a car that was smashed and dangling over a bridge after a fatal truck accident Thursday on Highway 101 in Buellton. The big-rig driver died after his truck crashed over the bridge and caught fire.

•   A gravel truck slammed into a BMW on a Highway 101 bridge.

•   The BMW was smashed into the concrete railing at the edge of the bridge. It dangled over the edge with a mother and two children inside.

•   Rescue workers were able to pull the three victims from the car. They were airlifted to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

•   The big-rig crashed completely through the railing and plummeted to the creek bed below. It burst into flames, killing the driver.

The deadly highway crash occurred at about 2:40 p.m., according to a KSBY News report.

California Highway Patrol Officer Danny Maher said a big-rig hauling a load of gravel was traveling northbound on Highway 101 when it slammed into the back of a black BMW in the Three Bridges area south of Santa Rosa Road.

“The BMW was then forced into the center concrete wall where the three parties in the BMW became trapped in the vehicle,” Maher said.

The mangled car was literally dangling over the edge of the bridge (see photo). The big-rig crashed through the railing and plummeted to the creek bed below, where it burst into flames. The truck driver, whose identity was not released, died at the scene.

Some Navy SeaBees who were stuck in the ensuing traffic jam were transporting a forklift, which they used to prevent the BMW from falling over the railing, according to a report in the Santa Maria Times. Rescue workers were able to free the BMW driver, 36-year-old Kelli Groves, and her two children — 10-year-old Sage Groves and 10-week-old Milo Groves — from the vehicle. There was no update on their condition as of Thursday afternoon.

All three of the victims were taken to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. It appears from news reports that the mother and her 10-year-old daughter suffered moderate injuries and were airlifted via helicopter, while the baby suffered minor injuries and was transported via ground ambulance.

Traffic was completely stopped on the bridge, which sustained heavy damage in the crash. CHP officials said it would remain closed until Caltrans engineers could completely inspect it and determine if it is safe.

According to the KSBY report, the big-rig spilled 50 gallons of diesel fuel into the creek bottom. Santa Barbara County Fire Department workers constructed a dike to keep the spill from spreading.

City of Industry: 1 Dead, 3 Injured When Big-Rig Crashes Into Car on Hwy 60

Monday, October 31st, 2011

A 22-year-old Diamond Bar man was killed and three others were seriously injured early Saturday in a multiple-vehicle big-rig crash on Highway 60 in Industry.

•   A small car entered the freeway and was struck by a big-rig. That caused the car to spin out across the freeway, where it was hit by another big-rig. The car was forced into the center divider.

•   An SUV then crashed into the rear of the second big-rig.

•   The driver of the small car died at the scene. The SUV driver and one of the big-rig drivers suffered major injuries. The other big-rig driver sustained minor injuries.

The fatal accident occurred at 2:50 a.m., according to a report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

California Highway Patrol officials said a 2003 Nissan 350Z driven by Jonathan Guzman Vaca entered the eastbound Highway 60  from southbound Azusa Avenue. After the Nissan got onto the freeway’s far right lane, it was struck by a big-rig.

The impact forced the Nissan into a spin. The vehicle slid across the freeway into the far left lane, where it was hit by another big-rig, the CHP report stated. The crash forced the Nissan to slam into the center divider.

Right after that, a 2000 Nissan Frontier SUV driven by a 33-year-old man from Pomona crashed into the rear of the second big-rig.

Vaca died at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan Frontier and one of the big-rig drivers — a 27-year-old man from Anaheim — suffered major injuries. Paramedics assisted them at the scene, and then they were taken to area hospitals to be treated. The exact nature and extent of their injuries was not released.

The other big-rig driver, a 64-year-old man from Fontana, sustained minor injuries. It was not clear whether he was hospitalized or treated and released at the scene.

Officials closed all but one lane of the freeway while they cleared the scene and investigated the accident. No one was arrested.

Truck Accidents Are Often Fatal

In 2009, 3,163 people died in crashes involving big-rigs, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Only 14 percent of these deaths were truck drivers or their passengers — 70 percent were passenger vehicle occupants. The remainder were were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists.

The numbers are even more lopsided in crashes involving just one passenger vehicle and one big-rig. A whopping 98 percent of the deaths in those accidents were people in the passenger vehicles.

Large trucks were involved in 9 percent of all motor vehicle accident fatalities and 20 percent of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in multiple-vehicle crashes.

Statistics also seem to indicate that younger truck drivers are at greater risk of being involved in accidents.

Braking Distances for Trucks vs. Automobiles

Stopping distance is much longer for heavy trucks than for automobiles. In addition to the physics involved, braking equipment can play a role in how long it takes a truck to come to a stop. In the past, inspections showed that out-of-adjustment brakes were the most common reason authorities ordered trucks out of service, according to the IIHS report.

In July 2009, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration issued a rule decreasing the maximum stopping distances for air-braked trucks by 30 percent. The rule went effect in August of this year for three-axle tractors with a gross weight of 59,600 pounds or less. Two-axle tractors and tractors with a gross weight above 59,600 pounds have until August 2013 to meet the reduced stopping distance requirements.

Vacaville: Poultry Truck Crashes on I-80, Chickens All Over Freeway

Poultry truck crash: A big-rig hauling 5000 live chickens crashed on I-80 in Vacaville.

Interstate 80 was closed near Vacaville early Thursday morning after a poultry truck crashed into another big-rig and dumped 5,000 live chickens on the freeway.

•   The driver of a big-rig hauling live chickens apparently fell asleep at the wheel on I-80 near Vacaville.

•   His truck started weaving across the freeway and then crashed into another big-rig that was stopped on the shoulder due to mechanical problems.

•   The chicken truck jackknifed and spilled chickens all over the freeway. Some of them survived but many of them were killed.

•   The freeway was closed for almost four hours while emergency crews cleared the road.

The freeway accident occurred at about 2 a.m., according to a KTVU News report.

California Highway Patrol officer Chris Parker said 26-year-old Gustavo Carranza Huerta was driving the chicken truck — a 2000 Freightliner owned by Toby’s Trucking in Petaluma — on I-80 west of Pena Adobe Road when the accident happened.

Witnesses thought Huerta may have fallen asleep at the wheel because his truck, which was hauling two trailers full of live chickens, was weaving back and forth across the freeway. Some truck drivers told Parker they tried to send Huerta radio messages in hopes of waking him, but it did no good.

Huerta veered off the road and his truck crashed into a 2001 Freightliner big-rig that had just stopped on the shoulder due to a mechanical problem, Parker said.  The Freightliner was hauling a load of Crystal Geyser Alpine Spring Water.

The crash tore the side off the water truck “like a sardine can,” KXTL News reported. The chicken truck jackknifed and one of the trailers overturned, spilling crates of live chickens onto the freeway.

Chickens and feathers were all over the road. Some of the chickens survived the accident but many did not, Parker said.

Initally, all westbound lanes were blocked, but Parker said two left lanes were reopened at 4:19 a.m. and by 5:40 a.m. all of the lanes were cleared.

Neither of the truck drivers was hurt, but two other motorists did suffer minor injuries in the melee. A couple from Napa was driving behind the trucks in a 2009 Ford Escape when the accident happened. The driver, 79-year-old Anastasia Loban, swerved to avoid the water jugs and chickens on the roadway, and ended up in a ditch. Loban and her husband were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries, according to KTVU.

Ceres: Passengers Stranded as Amtrak Train Crashes into Tomato Truck

More than 150 Amtrak passengers were stranded Monday afternoon when a train crashed into a tomato truck that was stopped on the tracks near Ceres, about 11 miles southeast of Modesto.

•   A semi truck hauling two trailers of tomatoes stopped with the rear trailer on railroad tracks.

•   An Amtrak train came barreling down the tracks, blasted the horn and slammed on the emergency brakes, but could not stop in time to avoid crashing into the truck.

•   The locomotive was so damaged it could not continue. About 20 of the 159 passengers were injured.

The accident occurred at around 1:40 p.m., according to a report in the Modesto Bee.

A big rig hauling two trailers full of tomatoes (packed in small containers) was traveling east on Geer Road when it approached the the stop sign at Santa Fe Avenue.

California Highway Patrol officer Matt Fowles said the truck driver – 31-year-old Rigoberto Jimenez of Delhi — drove his Freightliner big-rig across the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks at the intersection, but for unknown reasons stopped with the rear trailer still on the tracks.

“We’re still trying to determine why he stopped,” Fowles said. “We’re not sure if it was mechanical, or something else.”

While the big-rig was stopped, an Amtrak passenger train piloted by 58-year-old Barbara Neu of San Leandro, came barreling down the tracks at 80 mph, according to the Merced Sun-Star.

Jimenez apparently did not realize the train was headed toward him at first. Neu sounded the train’s air horns, which may have alerted the truck driver, who jumped out of the truck and ran to safety.

Neu hit the train’s emergency brakes, but was unable to stop in time to avoid crashing into the trailer full of tomatoes.

The impact tore the trailer from the truck and pushed it into the right side of a Toyota Camry driven by 46-year-old Maria Enes of Hilmar. The Toyota also was stopped at the intersection.

Power lines were knocked down. Tomatoes and debris were scattered all over the area — and smeared across the front of the train. The locomotive, which was pulling four cars, was so damaged it could no longer continue. The 159 passengers and four crew members had to get off the train and wait for Amtrak to bring another locomotive from Oakland so they could continue.

The CHP said 20 passengers suffered back and neck injuries and required medical treatment. Most of them were taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. The others declined treatment at the scene, saying they would seek medical care on their own.

Fowles said the big-rig driver stayed at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.

A truck driver suffered a serious head injury Friday in a big-rig crash that involved several vehicles on Interstate 580 near Dublin.

One passenger vehicle was wedged between the truck and the freeway barrier next to the BART tracks, which delayed commute traffic as well as train service for several hours.

•   A big-rig driver said he did not see a bright yellow Mazda Protege on I-580 and crashed into it.

•   The truck and the Mazda then crashed into two other vehicles and they all crashed into the center divide. The Mazda was wedged between the truck and a fence along the BART tracks.

•   The truck driver sustained a serious head injury. The Mazda driver and another person were hospitalized with lesser injuries.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m., according to a KTVU News report.

California Highway Patrol officer Steve Creel said a big-rig carrying 60,000 pounds of dirt crashed into a bright yellow Mazda Protege on eastbound I-580 between Dublin and Pleasanton. The truck driver was changing lanes and did not see the Mazda, Creel said.

On impact, both vehicles swerved to the left and hit two other cars — a Nissan and a Lexus.

The big-rig, Nissan and Mazda crashed into the center barrier, wedging the Mazda onto the fence next to the BART tracks that run between the West Dublin/Pleasanton and Castro Valley stations.

The Mazda driver and another person in one of the passenger vehicles were injured. They were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where they were treated for injuries that Creel described as minor.

Initial reports noted that the truck driver appeared to be more seriously injured, but the nature and extent of his injuries was not yet known. In a later article, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the truck driver sustained a serious head injury. He also was taken to Eden Medical Center to be treated.

The two left lanes of the freeway remained closed until after 5 p.m. and BART service experienced persistent but short delays through about 6:30.

The drivers were not identified in any of the reports.
