A pickup truck driver crossed a solid yellow line on Highway 152 Friday morning, caused a head-on crash that killed two people, and then walked away from his crumpled vehicle without injuries.
The fatal highway crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m., according to the Hollister Freelance News. A 2004 Ford F350 pickup truck driven by 45-year-old Martin Teeling of Aptos was headed west on Pacheco Pass and crossed into oncoming traffic about 5 miles southwest of Dinosaur Point, near Gilroy. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer Jaime Rios said Teeling’s vehicle crashed head-on into an eastbound Honda Civic.
The force of the impact caused the Civic to roll down an embankment, where it finally came to rest on a grassy slope at the foot of a tree. It is not yet known whether the vehicle hit the tree.
There were two people in the Civic. Both were killed. The driver, whose identity has not been released, was a male. His passenger was identified as a 29-year-old woman from Sunnyvale; authorities have not released her name.
Teeling, who was not injured, got out of his truck and talked with CHP officers. It is not yet known why he crossed into oncoming traffic.
The accident was the most recent in a spate of deadly motor vehicle accidents to plague the area during the past two weeks. Five people were killed in accidents during that time. Two people were killed in separate crashes on Highway 101 just six days apart, then another was killed Tuesday on Highway 156. Today’s two fatalities on Highway 152 brought the total to five.
